Welcome Mark! Colors and patterns are very important in rocks, but hardness is, too. You can check the hardness of a rock by trying to scratch it with a metallic object (nail, etc). The metal shouldn't scratch the rock, but "write" on it.

Welcome Mark
You will find answers to all your questions here in a friendly group as well as help on where to get the best deal in Grits etc
Or help in making your own Tumblers & Saws
As to what material to polish ? Adrian says use something to check hardness I use my pocket Knife ,
Put simply - - - - if it leaves a silver mark it will polish if scratching leaves a greay powdery mark it wont
Looking to your future posts and progression in this fantastic hobby
