We have only had my wife's 1965 GTO for two years now and she finally got to drive it yesterday when she picked it up from the restorer. Its been a lot of work chasing down parts, picking out the paint, buying the wheels, the tires, selecting the interior color and buying it, selecting the headers and muffler system, the radio, etc...... but it was well worth it. She got to drive it in the local Christmas parade today - cool, sunny and little wind. Bob Here's what it looks like:

There's only a few things that gets me more excited than rocks. One of them being muscle cars! Nice goat! 389 tri power?

Yup! 389 Tri Power. It had a 4 barrel but we wanted this one to be a Tri Power because our original many years ago was that way. Bob

Yes!! What a beauty, thanks for sharing the pics. Sweet paint, nice clean lines, and not too big.

Beautiful car! I like the rims, having a bit of the body color on them. The red stripe on the tyres are a nice add. I wonder if your wife gets all the horses out of that muscle engine, or do you have to drive it now and then to "stretch her legs"?

PS. Now I noticed: there are no head seats in the top of the chairs of the car. Aren't they mandatory now? They are here. I was going to ask you if the restorement included some safety improvements like adding airbags and such, but i doubt about it if even the head seats are missing.

No Adrian, here in the US we usually restore to original new condition, and most customs will only have the safety upgrades that come incidentally with interior upgrades, like better seat belts. Air bags are designed to work along with a completely different chassis design so they would do little to improve safety in a 1960's era car. I suspect that in a modest collision with a nissan leaf the GTO driver might find a little damage to the chrome on the bumper, with the Nissan a total loss.
Oh yeah, that is one bitchen goat.

Cars are only required what they originally came with, 5 cars that I've owned in the past didn't have seat belts.

This one only had seat belts in the front. The interior was turquoise but it didn't go well with the new paint and it was showing some wear so we changed it to black. We also changed the seatbelts (along with a lot of other interior components) to a reproducting black belts. Bob

Here is a photo of the car before we started. It really didn't look too bad but there were some problems with it that became evident as we looked closer into it. It was an Illinois car up until 2008 when it came to California. It was owned by a couple for about half of that time and then transferred to the wife for the rest. I was a Pontiac Historical Society documented all original car when we got it. It has most of the historical documents including the handwritten notes done by the salesman showing what the buyer's wanted on the car. These cars are notorious for very poor performing drum brakes. In fact I had a minor mishap with it on the way home after we bought it that led to making brakes the first priority as we started the work on it. Our son rebuilt the brake system with 4 wheel disc brakes, the first thing that got us on the path of not maintaining the all original condition, and this triggered changing to new larger wheels. He then rebuilt the suspension system and off it went to the restorer starting with rebuilding the engine. The car had original factory installed undercoating so there was very minimal rust throughout the car. As you looked closely you could see a number of circular depressions on the hood, trunk and top indicating that it had been in one of the notorious midwestern hail storms. We were aware of some repaired damage on the left rocker panel and it was evident that there was a partial restoration about 15 years ago. It wasn't quality work though because there were numerous areas where you could see sanding marks that had been painted over. We didn't care for the original color - Nightwatch Blue - so we decided to change to Le Mans Metallic Blue, originally used on the 2006 Corvette. As the body work progressed with sanding down to bare metal significant rust was discovered on the rear quarter panels (not really unexpected) that had been bondoed over during the first restoration attempt. There was also minor rust that we could see around the windshield and rear window trim. Repainting included doing the underside of the hood and trunk as well as all the interior. All the interior was changed from turquoise to black. The fellow doing the majority of the work was from Britain and he had a quirky personality and was a prefectionist. That was what we wanted so we were patient with his work pace and accepted his rather lengthy schedule. My wife is totally satisfied with the outcome of her car restoration project. Now (maybe) I can get my focus back onto rocks and cabbing! She was the only woman driving a vintage car in the parade and she got numerous comments and kudos from the females along the parade route!
