Howdy folks, Been cold or rainy here lately so I've been spending a little time with the rocks. Couple of year ago I picked up a pile of small dino bone slabettes and trimmings from a dealer. I I love working bone but all this is very problematic material with lots of fractures. I only paid a buck a piece and like doing free form cabs so I thought I'd give them a try. Started with seven freeform cabs but the 30 year old Genie has been acting up a bit so it's been slow going. One cab fractured. On the largest, I cut through into a big pit so I've got that one super glued and glued the one with fractures too just for the heck of it. These are the three I've finished. Range from about 25 x 35 mm to 35 x 45mm in size. Poor light today so I apologize for my lousy pics.....Mel

I concur with Nate; the last one has a nice color. Shapes overall are attractive. The last one would be worth treating with XThal.

Thanks for all the kind words folks.
Krystee: Dino bone is really fun to work. It's a bit softer than many agate type materials so is easier to sand. It can be pretty pitted and fractured but I just make free forms so I can work around the bad areas. I actually am real lazy and prefer to finish cabs in the vibe in big batches but dino bone don't tumble worth spit because the cell walls are often softer and undercut. Many of the cell walls seem to be hematite which polishes out well on the wheels with kind of a metallic sheen and on the wheels and pads it's fairly easy to get a good polish. I love fossil materials I can polish and bone is one of my favorites of all. My goal is to have an entire Riker of bone cabs for my collection. Got a good selection of slabs but I'm just so lazy about cabbing *L*...Mel
