Stones from our summer trip to the central coast of California. From north as far as the Jade Cove area to the south at Jalama Beach. With a stop at Moonstone Beach in Cambria. Attachments:

I would do a scratch test but with the light green layer it is more likely serpentine. Lot of it in that area.

It's a really soft rock (small boulder). I tumbled some other of the same kind and they all shrunk down pretty quick.

At Willow Creek beach the cliffs are all serpentine and the bulk of the beach rocks as well. It looks just like the "Monterrey Jade" in the area except soft. There is that very light green coating or layer on a lot of it. If it is from that area and scratches with a pocket knife it is serpentine, the state rock.

Those tumbles came out nice. Sounds like you had a great trip. How was Moonstone beach? Years ago (pre-kids) my wife and I took an anniversary trip up the coast and stayed a few days in Cambria. Loved it.

Hi Paul, I really loved the area. We did the Herst Castle thing and got to our hotel at dark and didn't make it down to the beach that day. I woke up around 7am and did a solo trip to the beach. Not knowing what a "moonstone" looks like, I just started picking up interesting rocks. I came back with about 20 lbs of "material". Around 10am we checked out of the hotel and made our way back to the beach. We asked a nice lady what the moonstones looked like. So we found five or so. We collected another 20 lbs and called it quits. We walked through the main drag and was impressed with the stores and their succulent gardens (my other hobby). I look forward to returning to the area again.
Did you collect anything on your trip to Cambria?

Happy New Year! That's awesome! My wife's only marginally interested in rockhounding ... being a retired 4th grade teacher she's naturally curious and finds it interesting from a "teacher-perspective" . At the time, I had put all my hobbies on the back-burner since we were newlyweds, so we didn't do any collecting. Like you, had a wonderful time, though. It's such a beautiful and relaxing place. I think that particular trip we had stopped in Cambria for a few days and then Monterey Bay for a few days before stopping in the East Bay to visit family. It was a really nice road trip. So you two hauled 40lbs of materials back! That's AWESOME! Paul

Happy New Year! My wife is also a teacher. Last year she taught 1st grade. At the start of school she moved up to third. About a month later her school "lost" a position so Tina moved up to a 6th grade classroom. Tina likes the rocks when they are all tumbled. She gives me crap about my Saturday mornings when I spend three or four hours "playing with rocks".
Out of the 40 lbs, I think I should have left about 28 pounds at the beach. Now I know I need to be more selective. After finding some very nice tumbles, many of my earlier larger rocks are going back for another complete cycle.
The great thing about this hobby is my garage is getting cleared out. Old hockey gear, Christmas decorations, wood I had saved thinking I'd need it for something, all headed for the trash. I even set up a work area with a drill press, grinder and a tile saw.
I hope you had great Holiday season!

Hey Buddy - Yeah, we had a very relaxing holiday, mostly visiting family. I know what you mean about the selection process. Andrew and Nathaniel like to take almost everything they find home. I ended up clearing out the side yard, putting landscaping paper down, and moving 15 or 20 square feet of rocks out there. A lot of common jasper and agate. I convinced the boys that, this way, they can a.) see it, and b.) show it to their friends without having to have Daddy haul boxes around in the garage. Tina's comment sounds a lot like Barbara's comments to me! Hope things are going well for you two! Paul
