Greetings All,
I routinely tumble rocks as large as fist-size using a QT12 barrel for the shaping stages and QT6 barrels for smoothing/polishing. It can take a long time to get them shaped and it definitely needs a mix of smaller stones with it. As long as the rock will have enough room to tumble in the barrel try it and see.

I think a 3 pound tumbler is only 4 x 4 inches? You may want to try and shape it up a bit on a grinder first. I believe it may just thump around in the center and do nothing or get turned wrong and just get stuck. Now if you had a 12 or 15 pounder I would say go ahead and throw it in. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Harry

Yep, I've done it too but only in my QT12. Like William says, I only put in a couple of the big ones with lots of mixed sizes. Helps get a good polish on the lunker and having a limited number of big ones prevents too much cracking and chipping of the little rocks....mel

I tumbled one the size of a tennis ball in a 6lb barrel - it took a long time just to shape up
