I am going to be going to San Diego to visit family before going to Quartzsite. Are there any good collecting sites along hyway 8 and around San Diego?

Yep !! You get shot at if you get too near those bundles. You could always try one of the pay to dig tourmaline mines east of San Diego.

Rock guides had areas listed along the I-8 but never tried them. The tourmaline mines would be much safer.

I might be in that area in January as well for a business trip. Guess I don't follow the news well enough. What's the deal with the burlap sacks?

Drugs being smuggled in. If the illegals think they're in danger of being caught, they'll stash their burlap bundles under bushes and run.

Hey Don, they call them undocumented workers in CA. They get free medical care, education and there's plenty of sanctuary cities that will protect them from the federal laws.

I lived in CA most of my life. I still call them wetbacks.
