Hi, all - I was running low on Tin Oxide grit in my vibe lap polish pan last week. I had almost a pound of optical grade cerium oxide that i had used in my tumbler and figured, whattheheck, and added some to the pan. Is/was this a bad move or no big deal? Thanks! Rick

Rick: The simple answer is no big deal, both work much alike. A pinch of Linde A (ruby powder) added makes either one polish better. Woody

what I like to know diamond versus cerium polishing? is there a difference ? is the process different on the surface of the stones?
cerium is a lot softer so is it primarily used as just a final buff? thanks ed

I was told Linde A is lab grown aluminum oxide (grown to .3 micron size crystals). Tin will polish a wider range of materials than optical or standard cerium. Adding tin to cerium would likely improve the results. Adding cerium would not hurt anything as far as polishing materials cerium works well on. Quite a few people come up with their own polish blends.

John, do you know where i can buy plain old CPP polish anymore? Alpha Supply was where i used to get it and it appears that they have changed ownership (?) or something and their website is terribly broken.
thanks, KD

I used to buy it (CPP) from Johnson Bros. but don't do business with them anymore. Ever try TXP? it should work much better and is less expensive because you use a lot less per batch. MLS carries it but not sure how much they sell it for. I have it renamed for $8 per lb., $5 per 1/2 lb. MLS may be lower price if they ship by mail.

KD:
Alpha Supply is no more. Jerry's Rock shop in Seattle has it if you are nearby, but on-line you will get the best deal from John. Another gone with the wind is the old Linde A, it was fine ruby dust, the new stuff is manmade, but seems the same as the old stuff...to me at least. Woody

Thanks, y'all - was hoping I hadn't goofed. BTW - What are "CPP" and "TXP"? $8/lb sounds REALLY interesting! Rick
