Had a little time on Tuesday to check out the beach in El Segundo California. Site #53 in Gail A. Butler's Rockhounding California book. I may have been a bit north of the site. It was $6 to park and I had a little under two hours to gather. Attachments:

You might find some good ones in the two middle rows, plus those two black ones on the top left. Give a few a try, you never know!

Paul, I think some of these guys will be coming out of the polish stage this Saturday. I broke a belt and was down a week. If they don't shine, they'll find a home in a garden pot.
I've been planning out the Gem Hill and Yermo trip. Do you think there are any other stops in that general area?

The Barstow (Yermo) area has a lot of great places to go. Do you have a copy of Mitchell's Gem Trails of Southern California or Strong's Desert Gem Trails? Lots of places within 30 minutes of the Yermo location. You can also stroll around Calico Ghost Town. Touristy but fun.
About 35 miles north of the Gem Hill location is the Last Chance Canyon location that others have been hitting up lately. Check out LarryS's threads on "Last Chance Canyon" in the Location section. He's got some great information.
Sounds like you're planning on doing a lot of driving? Paul

We were thinking of making a base in Lancaster and hitting Gem Hill on Saturday and Yermo on Sunday, or vice versa.

6AM!!!!! I get up at 6am five days a week to go to work. Now that I'm getting old, I never sleep past 8:30am. I try. I guess I feel guilty Saturday mornings letting those rocks tumble for an extra hour or so. Then the evenings are spent at D-land most weekends. Do you ever go see Billy Hill and the Hillbillies? Lots of fun. Just outside the Golden Horseshoe is that BIG stump of pet. wood. Neat story about the opals that Walt used for his wife.

Given the opportunity, Andrew and Nathaniel will sleep until 9:00. They're both sleeping when I leave for work. Isn't that funny? The older we get the less we sleep? You're right - even on weekends when I don't set my alarm clock my eyes usually pop open at 5:30 AM when I usually get up. Of course, I'm not much use after 9:00 PM either... HA! That's pretty neat that you two head out that frequently, to Disneyland. We've seen that big stump but the boys aren't that interested in the "shows". We typically hit our six or seven favorite rides and then head home.

Just got back from the park after meeting some friends. We did four rides and dinner. Rode Casey Jr. in the monkey cage.
