It's normal, happens while the expando is expanding. As long as it's not vibrating excessively and wanting to dance around the table once it's up to speed you're fine.

Well, it certainly doesn't dance around the table but I do feel a vibration when holding a cab up to it. I don't feel that on my Ameritool. I wonder if I messed it up.... Are there other things I should check on this machine that could affect vibration besides the bushing?

The vibration you feel is probably the splice in the belt. is it severe enough to make it hard to hold the cab?

Well, I have been using a piece of porcelain jasper to play around with. Not too hard to hold, I'm using my fingers only, no dop. It hasn't flown out of my hands but there is definitely a big difference in the smoothness versus my lap.

If you think the expando is running out of round there a few things to check
the first is to check the shaft/spindle/arbor (for now on called arbor) to see if that is running smoothly
remove the expando drum, turn on the machine, and with your thumb feel if the spinning arbor is running smooth
if it has (run out) or a wobbly feel to it that's a source problem that needs correction
it doesn't sound like you have that problem tho your bushing went on centered and straight so all should be a go
The other tricks is to turn the drum after its mounted on the arbor O... about 1/4 turn and re-tighten sometimes that re-centers the wheel
I feel a wobble on my drum on just 1 side it irritates me -then it goes away
have fun mostly

It is not safe to run expando wheels w/o a belt on them. There is a chance that they may come unglued from the hub. The warning is probably printed on the drum.

Agreed Lee. Never run an expando without a belt. You may get away with it a few times, but eventually it's going to bite you.

Thanks for the tips! Yes it states not to run without a belt but I'm glad you explained the reason why.
Lee, I think you are right. I believe I am feeling the splice. Later when I get more belts I will compare.
Woody said to use these dry and spritz with silicon spray. What's the best brand to buy?

Krystee, the splice will probably start to smooth out after a few cabs.
Any brand of silicon spray should work. Just something from the local auto parts or hardware store.

Krystee, is this belt the one you use to shine your OB?

It is my understanding the vibration was caused by a cracked drum bushing (cracked while installing). I've sent replacement bushings and all is well now I believe. And yes, it is very common to see a wobble as the drum starts to turn or slows to a start. It is a lot of bulk to spin but should smooth out at speed.

Yes, John is right. I cracked one of the bushings using too much force getting it onto the shaft. The replacement John sent me worked perfectly. He also explained to me that expandos need to run at a higher speed to expand correctly. That was my other problem. It is all working perfectly now though. Thank you John, you're awesome!!!

It looks like a 8 to 10 oz top grain hide. The smooth side is out? In my leather work I use the ruff side out with some jewelers rough to sharpen cutting blades.

Most people are using them with diamond compound so prefer smooth side out. For polish compounds rough out would probably be better. I have him make a few rough side out belts each order.

Hey John, how much are you getting for those belts in 6" X 2-1/2" ? I might be interested in one of each.

Prices:
6" X 1.5" $34.95 6" X 2.5" $44.95 8" X 3" $49.95
Prices may rise slightly in not too distant future. After Woody got the belts developed my cheap source for resin belt backings dropped them. Lowest priced resin belts I can find are a couple of dollars more each belt. I'll probably hold these prices for RTH members as long as I can. All prices are plus shipping but USPS is pretty low priced on something this light.
