I just realized that this trip to Q there won't be snow anywhere. has anyone gone after turitella or dugway geodes before? Would it be worth a little side trip? Anyone want to come collecting? ;D

How far away are those sites from Quartzsite?

Dugway is more than 11 hours and the turittela is 14 hours. Little detours for me...long trip for you.

If you have the time to kill, I'd say go for it. Dugway is pretty remote though no matter how you look at it. plan on at least a full day to get out there, hunt and come back to Delta.

How is the quantity and quality of geodes at Dugway? It's all luck of the draw for the most part. Find a place where someone else has been digging and start expanding the hole, following the white clay layers. The eggs will be in the clay. Some parts of the bed have a thick obsidian layer on top which you'll have to break through. it's nice if you find a spot where someone else has already done the hard work. I've done very well both times I've been out there, but I was cleaning up after a commercial dig.

I am looking at my gem trails book and there is an agate location that would be very handy by Summit.

Or you can buy them at Quartzsite, hang out and drink beer!

The best dugway collecting is after the back hoe has been in there. He will let you go through the piles after he has culled out what he wants, but I just found out yesterday the guy who runs the back hoe just died recently and the kids aren't sure if they are going to continue or do a fee dig or what. They also own the trilobite fee dig in the same area.
Come see us when you get here.............Tony

Sent you a PM. I don't know how you could read the above message. I posted it from my phone. If it's snowy the roads out to the Geode beds could be slick...and I wouldn't want to really dig in frozen ground. PLENTY of GEODES out there to dig. Just have to hit the right pink clay layer and it will be a blast! steve

I recently heard of an upcoming CFMS field trip to Topaz Mtn and Dugway geode beds in early April. Hopefully no snow on ground then... Here's the link: www.cfmsinc.org/fieldtrp/y2011/tr0412_TopazDugway.htmIt's always nice to be able to go with people that have been there.

I am looking at my gem trails book and there is an agate location that would be very handy by Summit. The summit area is worth the stop so long as there isn't much snow on the ground; if there is, the dirt road into the foothills will likely be impassible.
