Man, don't be busting that stuff up for tumbling. That's some super nice cabbing material.

I have plenty of small pieces to fit in a tumbler. The big ones go to the saw to get slabbed up I agree they are way to nice to crush up.

Haven't tumbled it yet, but I have 30 pounds waiting for our move in the Spring when I can get my shop set back up...

I can't tumble any until spring because my workshop is not heated and the water freezes at night. I hope to grind up a few cabs this weekend.

Is this material local to your area ? If so, I'd love to get a piece from you large enough to cut a 3 or 4 inch sphere. Don

Man that stone is awesome. I am just ramping up to start cabbing and have our first batch in the tumbler, but in one of the batches of stone I bought there was a bunch of this wonderstone and I love it!
So theoretically if someone were to head south on I-25, could they stop somewhere along the way and rockhound for this? Or is this something that comes out of a mining operation?
Either way, beautiful stone and I'd love to see some of what you cut out of it!

The area I get it is under mining claims. The area in the gem trails of NM book is under mining claims now as well. I found a piece one day on the side of I 25 a few years back. It was decent, I think it was down by cabillo lake.

I've tumbled it with mixed results. Some pieces were really full of silica and polished well while others were more porous and all I could obtain was sort of a satin finish. Even the ones that didn't take a mirror polish were still interesting stones though. Surprisingly enough, the more porous hunks were harder to saw than the more quartzy ones as they seemed to suck up the oil and make the blade run dry and bind in the cut.....Mel

This is the rock we tumbled for the 2011 World Rock Tumbling Competition. I did well enough to place 3rd and another board member (susand24224) did a GREAT job winning 1st place! This is a photo of some of the rocks I entered and it doesn't do them justice,,,, Although some of it can be quite pitted,it does take a wonderful shine. I've also cut some awesome cabs out of it with great results and used it for handles on an Alamo Bowie knife I made some time ago,,,, In my opinion you've found a keeper! connrock
