For those of you who have elderly parents and grand parents, It might be a good idea to check their bank accounts and recent activity on their accounts. I've just spent the whole day talking to police in Canada, the local police, the bank and my inlaws lawyer. My mother in law somehow let herself be talked into withdrawing and mailing $30,000.00 since the first of the year. The local police and bank have intercepted $8,000 before it left the country, and the Canadian police intercepted another $14,000 before it left for Nigeria. That leaves my mother in law out $8,000. She doesn't use the internet, so this was all done by phone and mail. If you care about your parents or inlaws, please keep an eye on them, and help prevent this from happening to them. Don

Bummer to hear and good warning! I recently had a interesting deal and new scam through Craigslist. I listed an item for sale and specified local pick-up prefered, but can ship for large price. I'm in Oregon and of course I had someone in New York wanting the item. Emails back and forth were normal - other than "Let me know a total and I'll pay you" without caring how much freight was ( that was my first...hmmmm moment). At anyrate the person provided me a shipping address and a good paypal account email which I sent a money request. He then came back and said money was paid - however Paypal needed the item shipped and once I shipped I was to provide a tracking number to Paypal to get my money... Ummmm Don't think so buddy! I told him once the money showed in my account then the item would shipped. He then returned an email calling me a scammer and was to notify the police of my actions ect..ect.. This person even went as far as to send emails to appear from paypal with all this legal looking material. However if you view the message source it will show some bogus email account. (True Paypal emails always are from XXX@Paypal.com) Was a interesting few days!

Thanks for the heads up on both accounts. I just set up a pay pal account and I would not have caught something like that. Here is another one. Jim You may have seen this before but its worth reviewing again. Both AT&T and Snopes verify the information.
809 Area Code We actually received a call last week from the809 area code. The woman said 'Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you- get back to us quickly. I have something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. We did not respond. Then this week, we received the following e-mail:
Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND 876
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809
This one is being distributed all over the US ... This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on.
They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.
If you call from the U.S. , you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute.
Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. WHY IT WORKS:
The 809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic . The charges afterward can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.
Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.
AT&T VERIFIES IT'S TRUE :http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=6045
SNOPES VERIFIES IT'S TRUE:
1. snopes.com: 809 Area Code Scam Are callers lured into placing calls to the 809 area code charged large long-distance fees? ...809 Area Code Scam Scam: Unsuspecting phone customers are gulled into placing calls to area codes in the Caribbean that result in hefty charges.... ...DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809 This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary especially given the way they try to get you to call.... ...Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" Phone Number. This is a very important issue of Scam Busters! because...

Don that is so sad. My mother in laws boy friend fell victom to the same type of scam. Only his misfortune was at the hand of Jamaicans. All done over the phone. The amount was so large he was to ashamed to tell us the full extent of the loss. These dirt bags are no better than child molesters. Taking advantage of the weak and helpless. Your mother in law is actually lucky as most never see a penny of what they lost. None the less $8,000 is a very expensive lesson. Stu

Update.---- All money was being sent to a Canadian U.P.S. processing center, where it was being forwarded to a Nigerian address. Seems that the Canadian police have been watching this one for a while. A U.P.S. worker has been arrested, but he was only a middleman. Nothing will happen to The Nigerians on the other end. But at least this connection to the scam has been closed down for now. Bad part is that they managed to completely wipe out the life savings of a granny in Minnesota. Luckily we caught it before the same happened to my mother in law. Don

Glad you caught it before it got to far. You may find the following 2 links informative. What Snopes says about the 809 scam. www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/809.aspI was receiving scam emails quite regularly thanks to a website I'd done business with being hacked. I started replying to them, I then found a website that was a great help in stopping them all together. My final reply was as follows. This is the actual Email I sent. "Hi Morenike, Thank you for your email, I found it most informative. Unfortunately I will not be taking you up on your kind offer. Please be assured I have forwarded your details to enough deserving people. Please see below for further details. Thank you. PS. Please don't contact me with any further offers as I have already received my ATM card , although mine came from MI6 not the FBI, Microsoft have made me honorary VP in light of my services to humanity, the Vatican has Canonised me normally only reserved for dead people." I then copied and pasted the contents of the following link into the email and sent it off. www.spiritualite-chretienne.com/annonces/english_scams.html Haven't had a scam email since. Simon

Hey Simon, I've replied to a couple too, just for kicks. My message to them is, " In the words of our great American Statesman, Bart Simpson, EAT MY SHORTS".

I don't think that anything good comes from Nigeria. We should blow it up.

Boy it seems as though the scam season is upon us BIG TIME. I was at the super market yesterday and when I was in the parking lot loading my car a person drove up next to me and called out to me. I thought he might want directions or to ask if I was pulling out of the parking space. No this dirt bag had a story to tell me. His story was that he just went to pick up some equipment for his boss and was accidentally given two extra surround sound systems. So rather than give them to his boss who will just keep them for himself his mission was to seek out a person in need and give it to that person at a very reasonable price. This poor dirt bag was trying to do a good deed for a needy person. A needy person who needed a surround sound home theater system. What a great guy. A friend of mine is a police captain and he has told me that there are these families of Gypsies that migrate all over the country pulling off scams. Stu

Just received the Nigerian scam business in my E-Mail box this morning. They wanted money sent by Western Union. Will check with Sheriff's office to see if anyone , F.B.I. or whoever might be doing something about this B.S.

Our cops can't touch them in Nigeria. Wish we could bomb them back to the stone age.
