Had this one started nearly 8 months ago and got stuck fairly quickly. This week I found it again and had a try finishing it. Got most of the fins and the body pretty much right but I'm not happy with the back-fin,... and the face,.... no need to say more. Will have to get back to that once I learned how. My biggest nemesis thus far, heads and faces. Still have a long way to go, but first I want to continue practicing getting more movement into my work. The problem with that picture for Kurts Koi. The head is almost stright on. Kruts is turned to the side. Mike That's the least of the problems. LOL Have enough imagination to turn that around. Kurt, did you see this? Just flip the photo, so the mouth faces left... and that's your fish:P Helen: I cant thank you enough for that picture. I saw it this morning on my I-phone (lets me read and see, but not respond dunno28) on my way to work. I knew right away what I could do to improve that bugger. I'm clearly a "Monkey see monkey do" person. Give me two pages of explanation, and I'm standing there, like the proverbial bull/cow, in front of a new door. Give me a glimpse in form of a picture and I don't even have to look at it a second time (and I haven't ! yippie24) So here is the new version, Streamlined the head, changed the eye a little, softened the transition between the head and body; but most of all, got rid of the lower lips. All in all, it took less than a half an hour to moove this piece from a "back-drawer piece" to contemplating on how to use it in a setting. LOLOL Thanks again for all and any help, don't know what I would do without everyone here.

Hello again KK You are being hard on yourself but isn't that what makes us great? I had the same problem with faces and heads. They are difficult in the round but when you try to do them flat it is difficult times ten. That is one thing that really amazed me about the chinese. They can carve just about anything in the flat and make it look so real. Looking at your work for the past months I am sure you will figure it out and improve on what I see as quite good. Jim

I think it looks great. We are all our own worst critics. You will get to a point where you're happy Kurt, and I bet it will be soon. Your work and dedication to it are commendable.

What a complex carving project!
I like the face, it looks like a cartoon fish. It has personality.

I thought tehe first version was pretty good but after seeing the redone rendition i have to say that it looks even better. It has an interesting expression which gives the piece a bit of personality. I agree with the others that we are our own worst critics. I very, very rarely do anything that requires a face since i am terrible at them but i know i should work on my weak points and after seeing this piece i may be inspired to have a try at one.
Thanks for sharing, btw, great pic, i really like the flower background, almost like it is swimming in flower petals.

Boy that last picture on the floral background is very good. I am new to carving having only worked with a piece of scrap Alabaster that Wampedy sent me. By what means did you do the carving? Did you use a flex tool or did you do it manually by hand?.. You really captured the motion of the fish it has a very fluid look to it. Thanks for sharing

I am totally awed by your work again. You questioned me about dust in my work space a while back so I am wondering if you work dry? That would add to my amazement because I think that it would be many times slower although you can see better what you are doing that way. I knew that you would figure out a way to make it perfect because you always have in the past. Thank you for sharing. It is always a pleasure to see your work. Jim

You are so sweet KK.... but you're the one who made the beautiful carving, and it was beautiful before the changes too. I do like the new look, the fish has more personality now:)!
