Howdy folks, We were discussing how we organize our collections in another thread. This shows part of my sloppy technique. Not great but when I'm done I should be able to find the slabs and smaller specimens fast. Only thing is, I have way too many specimens and this toll box will only hold part of the collection. The rest will just have to stay in bins, milk crates and plastic shoe boxes. This is the tool box I got for Xmas: Small specimens, mostly polished: A few geodes and such: More smalls. Still need boxes and labels on a lot of this stuff when I find time to do it. One drawer for my Hornitos Poppy Jasper collection from around our old ranch. Had too many so I had to stack these three our four slabs high. The oversized slab drawer. Too large to stand up. The way I do the general type collection. I kind of lean the slabs and stack them all alphabetized. I have one section for the US quartz gems, one for Mexico, one for foreign stuff exclusive of Mexico and one section for non quartz gems like jade, travertine, fossil limestone etc.

Wow, that is way more organized than I ever thought of being. Looks like you've got a great system. Looks like Santa needs to bring you another tool box next year.

I try to keep my rocks together by where I gather them. But by the time they come out of the tumbler, I have no idea where they came from. Good labeling must be the key.

My labels always come off in the tumbler. LOL My wife gave me a small rolling scrapbook cart with pull out 12x12 plastic trays to hold slabs for cabbing, like this: www.containerstore.com/shop/collections/scrapbookingStorage?productId=10012555Works well except that the wheels couldn't handle the weight! That's okay, I don't really need it roll anyway. If I decide I do, I'll make a dolly. Chuck
