UPDATE
thanks to Scott, here is a little quicky-tool for searching the forums using Google. This does take you off site, to my personal site, to get the search results. If Mark updates the site template (if he can even do that - I don't know what proboards does/does not allow) I can pull this link:
John's Quick RTH Search Page (thanks to Scott)

ORIGINAL POST:
I suggest we make this sticky. I thought about putting it under "board issues" but I don't think it goes there. If there is a better place for it than here please let me know and I will repost.
It is well known that these proboards forum searches leave a lot to be desired.
I've read comments recently expressing this frustration so I thought I would share a way for ANYONE to search for ANYTHING on the RTH forum and get actual results (crowd goes wild!)
It is actually quite simple to start. Go to
www.google.com and type in
site:forum.rocktumblinghobby.com
... and the word or username you want to search for.
If I wanted to see a list of posts about me (username herchenx) I would search for
site:forum.rocktumblinghobby.com herchenx
Another useful google feature is to be able to search for a phrase. This will get a little complex since you have to put quotation marks in to search for a phrase. Start with the site filter:
site:forum.rocktumblinghobby.com (no quotes) and type in the EXACT PHRASE WITH QUOTES AFTER THE SITE FILTER.
Here is a specific example, I am using quotes as you should in the search - I am searching for any posts that contain responses from November 13, 2011:
site:forum.rocktumblinghobby.com "on Nov 13, 2011"
If you want to do a more complex search, just separate the words or phrases by a space in the search box. If I remembered that I saw something from Snuffy on November 13, I could do this search:
site:forum.rocktumblinghobby.com "on Nov 13, 2011" Snuffy
Some limitations: Google's indexing of the site is not real time. If you posted something this morning it would probably not be searchable until tomorrow or later. Google is fairly quick though, so if it was something from a while ago it would definitely be indexed and would show in the results.
I hope this helps solve a recurring issue around here!
