I love this board. I am amazed at the beauty and skills demonstrated and freely shared for all and sundry, to view and enjoy. I am equally knocked out by the bounty and wealth of nature in America. However I have to admit I am jealous... When I see Estate Sales with the variety of rocks I see being displayed here. When I read of a member who picked through gravel he had delivered for a garden feature, and found wonderful stones amongst the delivery. I am jealous of the guy who burst his truck's alloy wheels because of the amount of material he had collected. I get envious of the people who make a great score on second hand equipment. Access to the variety of equipment manufacturers also gives me food for thought My goal, is to find an agate. I know if I persist I will find one. I'm retired, all I have is time. Then through this board and it's members, I'll learn to cab it. Then wrap it. When I've finished, I'll display it on this board. Meantime, I'll try to contain my jealousy and continue to enjoy and marvel at the contributions of the members here. Good luck to you all and thank you for your contributions.

Where do you live Jock? There must be someplace you can go rock hounding...you're welcome to come visit the U.S. and I'm sure people would take you out. I'll volunteer myself!
I agree that we are fortunate to have the amount and variety that we do...

I definitely feel grateful to be here, and I try to not take it for granted.
Thanks for reminding us of how fortunate we are.
I'm with Chuck, there must be somewhere you can go, or some group you can contact to find material.
Some ideas: - local rock shops - local universities - rockhounding clubs - quarries - beaches
I know you probably already have exhausted your ideas - and I acknowledge that we do have it pretty easy in general here - but the optimist in me says there has to be some way for you to get at some material and find ways to get rocks to shine up.
You might even consider practicing cabbing on something else like glass - so when you DO find your agate you can already have some experience.

Jock: I was just reading my copy of "Agates" by Johan Zenz and he mentions Ayrshire as a good agate area in Scotland. Also lists Scottish Midland Valley, Kincardshire, Fife, Angus, Perthshire, Galstan and a bunch of other areas as good for banded and moss agates. Apparently a lot are beach finds or in gravels of plowed fields or stream beds. He has several maps and pretty good text on the ares in his three books so you might see if you can get a copy through your local library. I looks like you've got good prospects in your area if you can access some of the beaches or farms in your region......Mel

I am also thankful for my variety of rocks and as you can see almost always someone here has the answer to almost every question. Jim

Hi Jock! This is a great forum, that is for sure. I did a little checking, and it looks to me as though you have Scottish agates that rival any found here. In addition to the info Mel provided, There is a book "Scottish Agates" by Nick Crawford and David Anderson Published by Lapidary Stone Publications, 2010 that should get you onto some great hunting. Here is the site, has pics too. www.agatesofscotland.co.uk/Another site with pics and info. www.curriehj.freeserve.co.uk/agates.htmHappy hunting! Bill

Yes, I am aware that agates are found in my area of the woods. I have visited these sites. The problem is, they are probably picked clean. The Burn Anne site requires a permit now as it's been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. I,m not saying there are no agates, just that I would like to find one.

If ya can, go too "picked out" areas and xpand. Back pack with water, and go further than most are willing to go. Also, check it out in spring. Rock will keep workn to top. Also rivers when they first come down from winter flows. Dont get discouraged. Keep wandern and a agate will find ya. Later Clyde

The Doctor mentioned is my Local Doctor, when I visit him for health reasons I always take a sample of my latest Agate finds to show him Jock as I live in your area I will try to post some pictures of the Agates I find around Turnberry beach area. It might let you see what you need to lookout for. It might take me a few days as my Mum is in hospital just now, but I will get the camera out ASAP. Dermot.
