the batch in 500...still has the swooshing sound while tumbling.
the batch in polish...had the swooshing sound until today...it swooshed for 3 days...now its kid of dull sounding...and not swooshing a lot....i opened the tumbler...and nothing is stuck anywhere...is this kinda normal...started giving it the shake, shake, shake...still dull sounding.
what should i need to look out for?

That sounds kind of strange but if you checked it and nothing seems amiss, I wouldn't worry too much.

Darn, I guess I just have to listen to my tumblers more. Just kinda muted rattles from mine, no swooshing I can detect. I would think swooshing sounds would be good though....mel

I wouldn't say for sure but it may have something to do with the size of grit > polish the grit is in little pieces where the water can move thu it --- while the polish is more of a powder and will form a slurry (and be sticky) faster so you won't hear the water moving between the rocks as much ??

yes I've noticed how the sound in my tumbler changes...I think it is just grit breaking down...or the edges getting worn down or something. I let it swoosh away with no problems. I think polish swooshing is likely a good thing. Maybe it's a sign that there are no rough edges and the rocks are smooooooth and shining up.

I think that the sound changes as a slurry starts to develop in the barrel. Less clinking of the rocks.

im not sure who it was....but i had asked a question about some pet wood before...and i was told i needed to here a swooshing sound.
everybody say swoosh in there head now ;D....i think they meant i may be over loaded if i didnt here the swooshing sound.
cp said he thinks it has a lump in it ;D ;D...i just poked around in the slurry with my wood poker....and i didnt find anything stuck.
if there is a lump of something in it tomorrow when i empty it...ill just give way to him ;D

A long time ago I wrote a little piece on listening to your tumbler. It was for a newbie but I got a lot of responses to it from others as well.
The ideal sound from a tumbler should be the same as if you were pouring stones from one hand to the other. The bigger the tumbler the more pronounced this will be and can be heard from quite a distance. With the smaller tumblers you may have to put your ear next to the turning barrel to hear it.
The clunkity clunk sound is a big no no and usually indicates that the slurry is too thick which causes some of the larger rocks to stick to the barrel and then fall down from the top of the rotating barrel onto the other rocks. This causes chipping, cracking and other unwanted results.
Swooshing can be good and bad.If you are starting a rough cycle and after a few days you still hear a "free flowing" swooshing sound it means you have either too much water or not enough rocks. This will lead to very little grinding and after a week you will end up with only dirty looking water instead of a thick slurry.
Good swooshing is usually heard right in the beginning of a rough cycle, polishing and burnishing cycles.
In my thinking,no swooshing in the polish cycle means that the barrel is too full especially in the 1-1/2 pound size.
Lets think here for a minute. We have a barrel running in pre-polish and everything is going great. We now take the same amount of rocks and go to the polish cycle.Right? But what do we add to the barrel for a cushion and how much of it do we add?Have we just overloaded the barrel? Is our barrel volume still at least 1/2 to 2/3ds or 3/4s full or is it full to the tippity top with rocks and cushion material?
Dunno if this is your problem or if it helps in "any" way but it's all I can think of.
Good Luck,,,,,,
connrock Ps:I just went back and read your post again and see that I haven't helped you at all.In your case I would say that the polish is making very tiny bubbles which is almost a foam (as some types of polish will do on certain materials) and this is OK and should turn out good results.
Sorry for all the blah blah above!
Shoulda sat in my "thinking chair" a little longer,,,,,Ha Bill??
