Well today was the day. It was to be the leave Unclestu alone with his rocks kind of day. A day that has not occurred in since August. Well in preparation forn the big day I woke up at 5 AM as I didn't want to waste on single second. I would have gotten up earlier but I was so excited about the prospects of getting to play with all of those slabs made it almost impossible to fall asleep. So at 5AM I was out of bed and ready to go. By 5:30 AM the handwriting was on the wall, or should I say the last minute please honey it is only a few things honey do list. Well as I was still intoxicated with the thought of a day raising rock dust in the man cave I agreed. After all how long could that little ity bity list of things take to do?............................ Well at 4:30 PM I was finally choosing which slabs to work with. By this time any sense of euphoria about working with my rocks had long passed. The anticipation of a day to be left alone with my rocks had been replaced by frustration and what ever patience I still had was melting away faster than the wax in my dop pot. What was supposed to be a relaxing 1st day off since August had now become a game of beat the clock. To make matters worse I chose to attempt to make my first heart. Not a wise choice. By the time the what was supposed to be 3" heart became a 1" broken heart I called what was supposed to be Unclestu's day with his rocks to an end.

Wow sorry about that but a lot of us guys are in the same boat. I haven't been able to saw a rock or go collecting in weeks. Wildlife Advisory work, horse stuff and working on staining the deck. Man I hate staining decks. Dang runny stuff gets on ya from head to foot when you're dong the high stuff and to me it smells like fish! *L* At least I get to run the tumblers but I want to saw rocks * Boo Hoo * *L*.....Mel

I must have it pretty good. My wife is usually glad to be rid of me for the day. I'm new to working inside the house with little rocks, but I've been working with big rocks in my yard for years. This is the latest project I finished this summer. My wife didn't even complain about all the dirty clothes she washed. Attachments:

I don't complain about my wife's sewing machines and quilting. She doesn't complain about me working on rocks. Can't mow the yard through the snow, or stain the deck. Only have a small basement leak to get sealed, and I have until spring thaw to do that.
I keep my Genie on the kitchen counter, complete with trim saw attachment.

That's a bummer, Stu. Sorry to hear. With my boys in school, basketball league, Church responsibilities, home-improvement/maintenance chores, I've had exactly one day to fire up the saw since I managed to get the unit cleaned up and running. So, yeah, I understand. About the only thing that I get around to is the tumblers, like Mel mentioned. Geoff - I think LarryS keeps his equipment in the living room. Off-topic - JugglerGuy, saw your website. Great landscaping work.

I'm in a similar boat.
My wife gets off work at 7:00, and my daughter started Kindergarten this year, across town, and started soccer. So where I used to be able get home at 3:30 and get home to fiddle with rocks for maybe 1 1/2 hours two days a week then pick up my daughter from daycare around 5:00 (which was around the corner), I've only been on my Titan 3 hours since December. It's life - and I love my family, but I've been very short of temper lately and I can completely attribute it to the fact that I get off work, pic up daughter, go to store, cook dinner, clean up, give daughter bath, and put her to bed (bath and bed is shared work on alternating nights.) And there are days where 15 - 30 minutes in the garage would lower my irritation, but it hasn't been happening. I am moved from one 'need' to another 'need'. I work to live. I do not live to work. I'm just lucky the Agate Index can be done in the evening when I am little tired and watching TV with my wife. Don't ask me about my weekends... I know I can't control much of my life, but I want some of my life back.

And.........I only had to buy another cab machine so I could cab too. Being MUCH more lucky in the rock department, and many other things, my wife both cabs, is learning knapping, and collects rock with me. Kathy even helps with boat building, carving, and other woodwork doing much of the finishing....I am not to be trusted with a paint brush, unless I am using it to sweep up dust. Oh, and big rock in the yard is something she loves doing. Woody

Just remind those wives that it could be worse. You could be out hitting the bars and chasing wild women.

Stu you are not alone. I was finally able to assemble my new workbench from Christmas time just 2 weeks ago. It makes me wonder how my wife, daughter and grandchild would survive without me for a day. "Why come out in he garage to ask me where the mustard is? And no I do not want to go look at something on the computer. Yes it`s a cigar. And yes I can reverse the lock on the door if I want to!"

I've been fortunate in this regard. As long as I am engaged during the evening hours with the family and help get all the kids to bed etc. I am able to work in the garage until I am too tired.
It takes a toll though. Last Friday night I dozed off in the easy chair before dinner and woke up at 230 am.
I haven't managed to get a whole day though - ever. I have to work at night.
She did get the first piece of jewelry out of the deal and I saw a spark of "Hmm maybe this is worth it"

I feel your pain. I rarely get time to play with my rocks, either. Whenever my wife travels for work, like this week, I have to come home early to pick up the kids from school. As long as I'm home, I might as well fire up my big saw. I don't have time to cab, but at least I can cut slabs and dream about it. Chuck
