Howdy folks,
For any of you Texans in the San Antonio region who have wanted to hunt the Eagle Pass gravels for those beautiful Rio Grande moss agates, jasper, orbicular materials, banded flint, Devil's Toenails, pet wood etc. the opportunity is coming Feb 25. Fifty cubic yards of Eagle Pass gravel has been transported to a park just east of Boerne, Texas for a rockhound hunt. The first date will be Saturday. Feb 25th weather permitting 9am -5 pm. The addy is 325 Kreutzberg Rd just east of Boerne at a park where there is also a cave tour available. there are running water, restrooms and picnic tables available at site. They are charging $2 a pound for what you take which seems a bit steep but they had to have the rock hauled in and you can pick out just the goodies. For more info contact the Boerne rockshop at manager@boernerockshop.com. I hunt Rio Grande gravel all the time and seldom get skunked, if they don't highgrade it first. I usually can find a five gallon bucket of goodies in a couple of hours and I'm usually looking through only a tenth of what they've brought in. They claim to have seen plume, moss, jasper and pet wood in the load. I'm thinking of giving it a shot just for fun and to see if the gravel they have is similar to what I've been hunting . Besides Boerne has a Burger King which we don't have around here and I'm really missing my dubba whopper *L*.....Mel

Mel, have you heard anything about a tailgate in conjunction with the rock event? I was talking to Dick Shields at the Boerne Rock Shop the other day and he mentioned the rock deal and said they were trying to organize a tailgate as well.

When I finshed boot camp that was the first meal that I ate after graduation. As I recall there was a BK just outside of PI at the time. That had to be one of the most enjoyable meals I ever ate.

John, A tailgater was mentioned in the Fredericksburg rock club bulletin but the plans did not appear to be firmed up yet. Only thing I don't like about Kerrville and Frederciksburg is no dang Burger King and for some reason, the Dairy Queens which are so good in some areas, absolutely suck around here...Mel

Is it not strange that eateries that are concessions and start with the same ingredients can be so totally different? The DQ's in New Mexico were very very good while in Texas ( where they were good 20 years ago) the DQ's now are pretty awful. Hard to believe folks can cook the same stuff so poorly in some places *L*.....Mel

Ya think the Taco Bell in Oregon sucks ? You can drink their hot sauce like water around here, and they have to put all of a teaspoon full of meat in their tacos.

Curt: Yep, judging by how the yard is looking, it has the potential to be a pretty incredible wildflower year. My lawn area must have a thousand bluebonnet and firewheel plants coming along.....Mel

I think I know where every Dairy Queen is between CA and Austin. I think their Blizzards are partly to blame for my angioplasty (couldn't be my fault). The DQ's in Texas have a completely different menu than in CA and the burgers are definitely not as good. We'll be doing two shows in TX in April with a trip to our lot in the hill country in between. Hoping to see a lot of wild flowers then. I'm guessing with the amount of rocks hauled into Boerne they will have more events throughout the year.

John, I'm planning on hitting the San Antonio show. If you're there, I'll try to stop by for a howdy. My only hope for the Boerne rock pile event is that they don't high grade first. Folks seem to have a tough time not doing that as evidenced by all the complaints that come from the Deming rockhound fee digs. I hunt the Eagle Pass gravel quite a bit and though some loads seem richer than others, it is really not that easy to come up with good stuff. I usually have to move several yards of gravel to come up with a bucket full of cutting stuff and at the $2 a pound they are charging, it won't be worthwhile to take marginal material. Main reason I'm checking it out is too see if it's the same material my buddy gets. If it's from a different quarry, it might be richer stuff. If it's from the same one, the layer they seem to be in is much less rich than that of a couple of years ago. There was a time when I could pick a bucketfull just off the top without resorting to moving tons of rock and using the squirt bottles. Those older loads were just full of pet wood too which I seldom find anymore. I'll make sure and post how it goes....Mel

When I was in high school one of my friends pafents owned a Carvel Icecream franchise Carvel is very similar to DQ. Anyway his families store was in a poorer area serving a clientel who for the most part didn't ave a car. We would always go to the store for some icecream on the weekend and we always thought it OK. Until I got my drivers license and went to a Carvel in a more affluent town. It was then that we discovered the family secret. They watered down the mix. Their customers were pretty much a captive audiance and couldnt go anywere else because they didn't drive. That was the first lesson that i learned about how poor people are exploited

Howdy folks,
Made the rock pile hunt today. Big pile of rock but from my point of view, not real productive. gravel seems to be coming from the same hole my buddy's rock comes from and it's just not rich in agate these days. I saw one nice plume/moss that was found. a little Devil's Toenails and lots of colorful flint and rhyolite. I myself found a couple of Rio Grandes, a couple of Toenails, some orbicular rhyolite and a little jasper, all of which I gave away. Fun day though. Got to meet Allen ( darstcreek) from our board, a fine fellow, and a lot of other nice folks from the Fredericksburg and Houston Clubs. Weather was fine and the Redbuds are starting to bloom. Only negative from the day was I forgot my roadmap, followed Google instructions ( horrible and bearing no resemblance to actual directions at all ) got lost trying to find the trip site a bit and could not find my dang Burger King for lunch....Mel
PS: Got to remember not to spend the afternoon horseback the day before a gravel pile dig. My old knees was crackling and popping like a box of cereal when I got up and down off'em. Of course, most of us there was older folks so all the grunts and groans kinda hid the noises my knees was makin. *L*
