I'd like to spend some time looking about for some cutting materials in the Laughlin/Bullhead City area. I will be there next weekend.
Is there any love?
Not looking for secret localities of crazy geodes (unless you dont mind sharing) would love to come home with some sphere making materials.
Thanks in advance!

Don't know about rocks but there are some awesome Indian petroglyphs located in the Dead Mountains in Painted Canyon, near mile 7 of the ancient Mojave Road. Interesting story. About 10 years ago we left our trailer in a remote area and started hiking in. Diane had new heart meds that kicked her butt and had to stay behind at a big outcropping of boulders in the dry wash. Couple hours later I returned and found mountain lion tracks about a hundred yards from where she was laying down. We talk about that frequently.
Then that evening, we noticed a crazy gray fox that kept running around our campsite. We fed him hot dogs and other goodies. Great entertainment. Then months later I brought a ton of 35mm camera gear, big telephoto lens, tripod, flashes and lanterns. Set up food & lanterns about 50' from camp and just sat there waiting by the campfire to get some nice close up shots. As time went by, I looked to my side and it wasn't 3' away where that darn gray fox was sitting on his butt, just like a dog, looking out at the food I set up off at a distance. I practically crapped my pants! Tried to shoo the fox away so I could get a picture of him with the telephoto lens but couldn't!
This was all pre-Goober days. He would have protected us!

Probably a kit fox. They are pretty bold little camp beggars. I used to hear a lot of people seeing them at camps at Wiley Well area. As far as rock hounding near Laughlin/Bullhead we did the Cloud's show 5 years there but never had time to rock hunt. I know the Bullhead club has a claim with some variation of paint rock and there are agate pebbles along the river. I dug amethyst ribbons 10 miles West of Needles off the I40 but it wouldn't be sphere material. In the same general area there is an outcropping of blue palm but it has been a lot of years and I don't have the directions anymore. The best rocks I've seen is the fire agate at Don Nelson's Cuesta fire agate mine near Oatman. He advertises in Rock And Gem. Of course, that isn't sphere material either. Very high quality fire agate though.

I don't know much about that area but I have been there and most of the good collecting areas listed in books is now in the hands of the National Park Service so is off limits to collecting of any kind. They take it very seriously and regularly patrol different areas within the boundaries of the park/recreation areas. Hope you find a place to collect and if you do would love to hear about it.

Here's pics of his first visitation. Kit foxes are tiny and have huge ears. This is a gray. Only member of the dog family that has hooked claws and can actually climb trees. One of our favorite camping spots in the East Mojave Preserve, in the New York Mtns we know where 3 live. We were camping with a group of people on Halloween, I remember because they bought a pumpkin. The gray foxes love it and ate the whole thing. As we chatted by the fire, these guys were climbing up all the pinion pine trees just like cats. Weirdest thing you've ever seen. Never gave exact location because we didn't want hunters to shoot them. Can't drive to this location anymore. It's a wilderness area now. Check with BLM's website because most of the desert mountain ranges are wilderness in CA and you can only walk in if you buy a donkey and carry lots of water. Think there's over 85 wildernesses now and growing as we speak. Yeah, it's public land alright! LarryS

If I find anything either on my own or thru the help of this forum I will share thru images.
Love that fox. I'd love to have a fennec. The Saharan version of a kit fox.

Not but a few miles away, you can dig fire agate at the Cuestra mine. The owner, Don Nelson will give you plenty of guidance. Well worth the $30.00 per day digging fee. The mine is right next to old route 66.
Don's number is 928 565 4145 it is best to call, and make a reservation. There is not much room for but a few people.
There is also good agate, pet wood, ans jasper on the river bars just up stream of the casinos.

Do you mean along the Colorado river or a dry riverbed?

I've dug on Don's claims before. He also has some very nice Fire Agate he sells. Super NICE Fellow! I was fortunate to dig there while I was working on a Lowes in Bullhead City. I dug three days(in the mornings) and he always kept my spot reserved for me. Found some awesome material. At least it will be cooler now than it was when we were there....mid-August! steve
