This big boy has been hanging out in this tree all day. First Great Horned Owl I've seen around here. You can almost see him drooling every time I let Jake go outside.

Very cool picture. Definitely keep your eyes on Jake, those owls are big and powerful.

He was sitting right outside the bathroom window, about 20 feet away. He could see the back and most of the front yards from their.

Years ago, whilst on the way home late at night I happed on one of these guys that had been car light blinded, and was walking in the middle of the road like he was drunk. I stopped, picked him up. put him/her on the seat of my rig, and drove home. By the time I got home (fifteen minutes) I had forgotten about the owl It had been about an eighteen hour day. Next morning, I went out to my rig, opened the door, and the owl flew out. Scared the crap out of me, since, again I forgot about the owl. It flew up the tree by my rig, and stayed in the tree all summer. It was a big oak, and it was hard to find the owl, but every day it was in the tree.
You just do not see these guys out in such an exposed place, like this one. Pretty special to have them this close. Woody

He's back this morning. Same tree, different branch. Since Jake is a small dog, I'll have to keep an eye on the owl every time I let him go outside. Don

What a great pix! We have a few owls around here, but I don't think they are the great horned type. You mostly hear the owls at night, but we don't get to see them often. What a beauty to wake up to in the morning, hope he hangs around for you!

Sadly, he only stayed for 2 days. Maybe he'll pay a visit again one day. Just as long as he doesn't try to make a meal out of Jake, I don't mind.

Beautiful picture! You don't often see owls, even when they are common. Back in my college days in Minneapolis, a friend and I rented a house in the middle of the city. For several weeks we had a screech owl that roosted in the silver maple in the front yard. Not always on the same branch, but never much more than 15 feet from the ground. He'd just looked at you, didn't seem to care that we were looking at him.

oh wow!!! what a treat! I've seen a few owls around my place, but only at night, and only if they fly in the lights.... trivia: did you know you cannot hear an owl flying? their feathers are such that it make them soundless when they fly so they can sneak up on their prey....needless to say it scares the crap out of you when you're walking at night and one flies past you because you cant hear them coming!
