I picked up an old beat up slab saw today. It is a bit rusty, the vise moves but there are some bolts that wont budge. The part that slides the rock toward the saw for each slab is stuck. Any ideas on this old thing? I had a 20" blade in the garage, it is a marble blade and not a lapidary blade, will that matter? It is a good MK blade. I traded $300 worth of hickoryite for this saw. Hillquist saw. Jason

Pour ATF fluid on the stuck bolt, then heat with a torch, then pour more ATF fluid over the hot bolt. It should free it up.
That blade should work, just might wear out faster or need dressing more.
Nice find...................Tony

Hilquist are good saws. MK makes many blades for many applications. The main difference is the hardness of the matrix the diamond is in. The softer the stone the harder the matrix can be. Marble blades will be much better than a tile blade but likely not as good as a softer matrix lapidary blade. Marble/granite, etc blades will cut those softer stone materials chip free. You will have to try it and see how well it works. If it will cut hard rock with a smooth cut it should last longer than a lapidary blade.

Great find, Jason. I'd make that trade as well.

Jason:
A good deruster is citric acid in warm to hot water. One cup to one gallon of water. Of course this will require the removal, and degreasing of the rusted parts. The rust will covert to metallic iron very quickly. After removing the converted metals, rinse it with hot to boiling water. this will remove the acid, and heat the metal so it will dry quickly. If it drys slowly it will flash rust. The black conversion product left on the metal stinks...do not do this in the house if you are married, for some reason wives react badly to this smell in the house.
Your 'new' saw has the potential to be restored to new condition. Woody
