I have heard some horror stories of tumbling the petosky stones and having them crumble up becuase they are so soft. Yours look good. Did those go through 60/90 with those other rocks and fossils? I have not seen too many posts of tumbled fossils so I look forward to following the posts on this batch. Chuck

Yes, 60/90 . as you can see the paint rock came out great . it is softer than the petoskeys . there were several other petoskeys in this batch . they came out good too. Some of the other fossils, with more quartz need more time . i tried to match the hardness on these, but the variance is like a solid line . As far as petoskeys , i did not put in some that i have , that are chalcedony and quartz replaced .

I've read that Petoskeys can be roughed in 60/90 but have more problems in later stages. Are you planning to try finer grit on them?

What is the hardness of that batch? I guess those fossils are all agatized? A lot of what we find here in florida are limestone fossils. They're like chalk, you can break em up with your fingers if not careful. I don't think I can tumble them at all. Those came out beautiful!

That is one of the best mix of patterns and colors I've seen in a batch of tumbled rock. What in the heck is that cream and brown and green stripped rock?

Im thinking the finer grit will not affect them badly, and will need plenty of pellets to cushion them . Daniel - I dont know . it is a strange one, guess it is a metamorphosed sediment.

Well, theses are not done, but i did some many years ago, and went by the book of one of those toy tumblers. i dont think it is that hard, knock on wood. there is quite a variance in petoskey in hardness and texture, as with the other fossils . the very soft ones seem to be more pitted too . These are Illinois finds . these are softer than some i have that have quartz replacement.

Thanks ,Snuff! Quite a compliment-coming from you ! i hope my luck continues. i sure could use more tumblers and money for grit. kinda expensive for my budget
