We left Mojave around 10am and stopped for gas and Subway food. Our first stop was Castle Butte. This picture was taken a little southeast of Castle Butte along the power lines. Good dirt road and NOT windy. Tina got a chance to paint and was able to gather two bags of material. We were looking for the burro's (saw scat) and were witness to the songs of the coyotes. Easy pickings. Good place to stop. Attachments:

After Castle Butte, we hit the road and had our lunch at a Rest Area near Boron. Next stop the Kramer Hills site just off the Hwy 395. Attachments:

The sand where our car got stuck. I was able to push it out while Tina drove. I had the bumper pulled out a bit. I just snapped it back in place the next morning. Plastic cars are great! Attachments:

Love the smell of creosote in the morning.
There's a Subway at Kramer inside the Pilot gas station.
Nice pics and thanks for the trip report.

Bill, I'm really curious - what was your overall elapsed mileage for the entire trip. You and I live pretty close and, if I'm following you right, you went from Gem Hill to Castle Butte to Kramer Hills to Yermo. Andrew and I were up in Yermo yesterday and that was about 250 miles round-trip, so your trip was probably around double that? What a great rockhounding weekend!

Paul, I wish I kept track of the mileage. We left our house Sat. morning West 22 to 405 north. 405/5 north to the 14. Stayed the night at Mojave at the 14/58. Sunday we went to Castle Butte, then Kramer Hills off the 395. After that stop we headed south to Hesperia for the night. The next morning headed up the 15 to Peggy Sues. After breakfast we went out to Field Siding. From there to Yermo, Calico then home via 15 to 91 to 55 to 22 to Beach Blvd to Trask to Descanso to 24th Street to sleep. I ran a bit ragged for about 3 days at work. It was fun. Tina had a good time. Well worth it.
Have you seen those rockhounding videos on youtube. Two hour trips from L.A.. Palos Verdes, Wrightwood, Kamen Road, Acton and Tick Canyon. I figure if it's hot this summer, coastal rockhounding may be worth it. Fewer snakes.

Great meeting you up at Victorville, the other day, Bill!
That's quite the rockhouding drive (tour?) When you stopped at Peggy Sue's did the Marines still have all their armored vehicles parked across the street? Nathaniel wanted to stop there for photos. Yes, I saw those videos. They're partially responsible for getting me back into the hobby again. The Acton, Wrightwood, and Tick Canyon sites are easy to get to and fun, especially if you have little kids like I do. Sometimes the three hour drive out to the El Paso Mountains or the areas east of Barstow are a bit much for Andrew and Nathaniel. They're great travelers and never complain but they are tired at the end of the day.
We ought to meet up at Tick Canyon or one of those "local" areas of 14. They're fun and easy...a relatively "quick" trip.

The views look great, I love desolate areas and from what I see the collecting was pretty nice!
