Have you ever tried a monopod. They are fast and take a bunch of shake out of your shots. If you get a good one you can use it for a walking stick with your camera attached. I used one in China and would not use anything else except for night shots. As steady as you are you could shoot a 500 lens with a mono with no problems.
Awesome photos Jim

Yes, a monopod would give you another 1-2 stops in low light. In Curt's case, though, he's doing really well with the shallow depth of field.

Yep Jim, I've considered a monopod, just haven't wanted to spend any more money right now. Time to give to Caesar what is Caesars ya know.
Shooting birds with a tripod is very difficult because they move so fast. A monopod would be a lot easier. Maybe later in the year.
Chuck, I always shoot birds at f8 to get the shallow DOF, and use as fast a shutter speed as possible to keep me and the birds still long enough to get some detail.

Curt, you could make a monopod easily. As far as I know, all cameras are 1/4 x 20 threads. Just screw a piece of all thread into a broomstick. Wouldn't be an adjustable height, but would cost under a buck.

Thanks guys!
There is another method as well Nate. Tie a string to a 1/4 inch bolt and tie the other end to a large washer. Screw the bolt into the camera and stand on the washer. Haven't tried it yet but if it works, it's very portable and cost nothing.
