Alisha, I think it looks great!! But! Before you can do anything with the cab, maybe you should flatten the back first? Then, you can set it down and look at it from every angle to figure out where next to cut. On the other hand, if you are going to use it 'floating' in something, you won't need to worry about a flat back and only take out odd spots.
The penguin doesn't look bad at all... it only seems to because it's not polished. Once you get it polished, and the rough spots smoothed out, I'll bet it looks great!
That's my dilemma too... I want to go with the flow of the opal fire, but most of the time, it doesn't conform to a standard useable shape. That's why I'm still working on the glass resin project!

Thanks you guys Think I'm going to get those rough spots out and leave it in it's current shape. The 6th picture from the top shows the bottom. It just slopes up on the top...lol I think I'm gonna leave the penguin alone until I feel like straightening out my lines a "little." He's got a nice cozy space in my rock box for now though...lol

Hi there, haven't seen you thread for quite a while. Before giving up on the Penguin; spend a few minutes and polish it up. Then have a look if you really don't like what you see. Usually, any piece looks the worst just before things are working out just right.
I find, that often after polishing something up, I get a clear idea as to what to do to correct most problems. Sometime after struggling for days, problems are resolved in a matter of minutes. So, pick it up, polish it up, and then lets see.

Hey, girl, it looks pretty close to me. Just need to go slow and clean up your excesses before you go on to make more Like others have said, do some polishing, then look it over again, before you do more...or quit. T

Okay, so I did some more work to the penguin. I cleaned up the lines (by hand) with one of the diamond bits for my Dremel and it looks a little bit cleaner, if not cartoony. Right now it weighs ~13 ct. I think I'm going to sand it and polish it and leave it at that. If nothing else, I consider it a learning experience Here is the back of it. I'm going to leave it one sided rather than carving the back like I wanted to do originally. The top of its "head" is thinner then the rest of the back so I don't want to risk cracking it while drilling the other eye. Here's a picture of it on the scale:

I am sorry that I missed this ongoing project. Not that my advice would have been any better than anyone else. From my experience I would have to say that you did a great job for a first try. Carving with a dremel is quite difficult and takes a lot of experience. I think that you have learned a lot here and your next try will be better I am sure. Do not give up or be discouraged because the first try never turns out the way you think it should. I have done a lot of carving and I still have not carved a piece that I was completely happy with. Keep your shapes simple to start with and you will start seeing successes real soon. If you start with abstract shapes it will give you a feel for the stone and the dramel and since it is abstract it is pretty hard to screw it up. As you gain experience you will find it easy to move on to recognizable shapes.
When I first started I would clean up the stone then put in some nice concaves and sharp edges just to get the experience. It paid off and I can now see and make shapes that I did not dream that I could do when I first started.
From going over this project I think that you will be a good carver once you get a little experience. Your desire is high, you are willing to learn and you can already recognize where you need to make improvements and you seem to have a good eye for shapes. Once your eye and hand learn how to make those shapes you will be the happiest person on the planet. It is a really good feeling when you make something like this that others see as a work of art. You are well on your way and I wish you luck. Jim

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Jim My biggest problem is depth. I've never had an eye for it. Even when I draw/sketch everything is one dimensional, cartoony. If I can learn to overcome that, my carving may take a turn for the better.

Yeah, but cartoons are cool, so maybe you just need to go with the flow I like your cold bird. I think sanded up real smooth and shiny it will be very nice! Just a thought, but if you compare the back with the front, you see two ways of expressing the same bird. The back uses gentle rises and dips in the contours, where the front uses incised lines. Both are valid ways of expressing birdness...so maybe explore both avenues in future efforts? Keep at it! Tony

Thanks Tony. I hope after sanding it looks okay, at least. Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't thought of that. I'll keep that in mind for future carving attempts
