I just got a new leather belt and am going to put diamond paste on it and use it for final polish (50,000 grit). Is there a proper way to break in the belt before putting the paste on it? Thanks

You should spray it with a mist of silicon spray lubricant. Work the diamond into the surface by pressing the stone into it. On my polish discs I spread it around with my finger then work it in with the stone. If it starts to feel too dry remist with the silicon spray.

Thanks John, I have the new machine running now and am working on fine tuning the water system. This is a huge piece of leather, it has just a little thump to it but I think it will go away as I use it. 8" wheels are huge compared to the usual 6" ones. I have the machine running at 1,200 rpm at the shaft. I tried it on a piece of Tee-Pee canyon agate that I had been working on and it walked through it so fast and now I can put the final polish on it. I can't believe how fast the wheels cut. I have been messing around with junk wheels for so long. Thanks again John for the ultra fast shipping on the pieces I ordered from you, I will be back.

Warren, I bought a leather belt for both my 6" and 8" setup and have been using them for the last month, and the belts from Woody are the bomb! Robert

how about mineral oil, vegetable oil, baby oil? any of those work? they certainly won't smell as bad....

Baby oil is mineral oil with a smell added. Think it would be too slippery.
Vegetable oil would turn rancid after a couple days, and stink to high heavens. Probably also too slippery.
A light misting of silicon spray would be best, and has very little odor.

Instead of buying ''''diamond extender'''' silicone spray, find kitchen/restaurant supply and get a can of food grade silicone spray. The can will be much bigger, and cost less, and you will never need to buy another one. Woody

Silicon spray from Home Depot is something like $3 for a large can. I stopped selling the DP extender ($8.55 for 2.5 oz or Microsol$6 for 1 oz.)

If you want to use a polish, dampen the leather with water and add polish in paste form as any buff or mix polish in spray bottle and spray on leather belt. The silicon spray is used only with diamond compounds.
