I finished several domed specimens for my display a week ago. Two made it in. One got bounced and will probably go to the silent auction for my club. The graveyard point is my favorite. I saw the pink plume and had to chase it across the rough. It's actually not my piece. I found the chunk in our club's stockpile and polished it up to raise money to buy Agates III for our club's library. Trouble is, I really like it and will be bidding on the piece - and there's some people in our club who go crazy for pink. (The brazilian will also be going that direction to help buy the Zenz book.) So the pics: Here's the Whale Bone from our local beaches: And the Brazilian. Interesting, but not much contrast. I have more rough from this location that shows the banding much stronger...so back to the drawing board. Thanks for looking and listening to me prattle on. Lowell

Specimens, partly polished! That's my favorite way to outline beautiful rocks. You did it great. The whale bone is my favorite but I completely understand why would you bid on your own creation - the pink plumes in the Graveyard Point are fantastic.

They're all spectacular, and I too love those Graveyard Points that hold pink plumes, but the whale bone is spectacular. I learned something today, as I hold a piece of whalebone and I had no idea that it could be polished. Hmmm.

Beautiful Graveyard Point, really cool whale bone & I think the Brazilian has it's own charm, as well with that shape & the delicate colors!

Well Mel,
I'm glad you like this whale of a bone - but I thought my whale member thingy I posted in the fossil section a couple weeks ago would have impressed you more! (And why I have found the need to share by whale bone with others in such a public place is beyond me..... )
(Oh Mel - just found your email regarding the Pisgah Road Site - don't know why I missed it - will send you what I know plus am checking with Ron regarding mileage.)
To all, regarding whale bone vs plume - I guess the whale bone is less rare out here. I know two people who have put in complete display cases withe polished and rough material. I don't see much in the way of Graveyard Point - which makes it more unusual, I guess.
Thanks for the comments,
Lowell

Lowell, My buddies have already been and gotten back based on my limited directions. Apparently they wandered around and really scored some incredible flame agate. I guess they found a big vein and actually got a couple of huge blocks out....Mel

That has to be the best whale bone I've seen. Most I've found have porous vugs and not very interesting colors. My best find is a knuckle bone. Too nice to cut or polish.
