Mel- is perty wierd looking. Is the very upper trunk core of the new growth . Most of the trunk was roots that grew down as the tree grew for support , and this core xylem was compressed by the pressure of the root growth, so the core is pretty much non existant in the lower trunk.

That's some colorful texas wood Ted! In the fern, is that worm holes or palm fiber? It's pretty cool, even though the colors are muted.

Nate - that is the core xylem of the fern . i took the photo of it dry, the others are wet.

Some really great petrified wood. I like the Psaronius slabs the best.

The last is my favorite. Do you think you can find a solid outline/edge for a cab and have all the other features within the cab?

Hey -Kurt , i m no cabbing expert , but the slab is solid , there is one fracture that will be in play that will be visible, unless you do that stuff that you do to fix that .
