Hey friends.... Been in tears for the last 5 hours. Mine and Patrick's website was hosted on Microsoft Office Live since 2006 and it is closing down in two weeks. They offered a transition to Office 365 for a 6 dollar monthly fee. I accepted and spent soooooo many hours the last month manually transferring over my site. Today, I transferred over my paid for domain name and "POOF" my website disappeared. I was in tears. Called Microsoft and they set me up with a technician that took over my computer and started digging around.... very weird watching my mouse open and close things all by itself. Everything was great and then the tech said that he figured everything out but I would have to give him $170 to fix the problem. I cried, I followed Microsoft's instructions step by step with the self transition guide that they told me to download when they decided to close Office Live, I ended up having to click the X to disconnect the tech from my computer, rebooted and immediately changed my passwords. I am just sick to the point of being nauseous. I have no website right now and I don't know what to do..... Where do we go, who should we use? I'm not paying $170 additional to Microsoft for this horrible inconvenience. We are just a missing link right now and I'm devastated. I worked so hard on this website, I can't believe it just disappeared! $170? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Are you flipping kidding me? This was due to a problem on their end. Why are they trying to charge me?

I am sorry to say, it happened to us here, and it was worth it! Their tech took control and really fixed our 'puter so my wife now has an hot rod. It would have cost us more to have a tech do it locally, then have their tech do it. I understand your frustration though. I also feel a little taken aback by the 'puter. One day, they will be telling us what to do. I am glad I will not be here then. I am kinda old time.

I'm sorry to hear that, Krystee. That's always frustrating when computer issues crop up like that. My desktop crashed late last year and I couldn't get it fixed; that was aggravating as well. I know there are a lot of small office / home office website hosting companies out there. A careful Google search would probably yield some results. Doesn't change the level of frustration but it would get you out from under the corporate heel of Microsoft. Paul

Wow, I'm very sorry. I can only imagine the frustration. Not to mention their attempt to extort you! I agree with Jack though, Intuit is a good bet.

Hi Krystee, So sorry to hear of your problem with MS. I have had issues with MS with my user account and windows. I always have to sign in more than once in order to view my email. I always get a message saying the computer is not responding. I now have a brand new lap top and that computer also gets the same problem. I wish I and my wife didn't have such a large adddress book. I would drop MS like a hot potato. I bet they will correct my problem for $170.00 though!!!

OUCH Krystee!!! First question... how did you make your website and upload it? Can you use HTML directly? Which software? I never used MS for websites, so not familiar with them. How are you uploading your site? DreamWeaver? Frontpage? One of Microsoft's website programs? What did the person specifically say the REASON for the $170 charge was? What would he be doing for it? Because he's charging because there's time involved... and if you figure it out yourself, you don't need him to spend that time. Did he tell you what was missing? I used to do web design as a little side thing a few years ago. I don't do it now, but I can tell you about it. You can do EVERYTHING yourself, but you have to be willing to take a lot of time to learn it, and then do it. I use a little web hosting company that is very inexpensive, but I have complete control over it (and complete fault, no help possible from outside). I can't give you a crash course in how to do web design, but nearly everything you can possibly want to know it is online... I can probably point you at the answer. Here's my old lazy site: www.azengraphics.com - all written in HTML.... VERY simple sites, but simple to fix also. If you want a quick solution, and the guy can PROMISE you that for $170, your entire site will be up and running, it may be worth it. But what if it happens again? It may be worth it to learn what you need to know yourself. Personally, I think creating a html site that you have complete control over is way easier... you can move it to any host anytime. Stores are a bit more complicated... but many webhosts offer that as well (not to mention Ebay, Etsy, Facebook, etc). Anyway, this is fixable... how much time do you want to spend fixing it tho?

I've had a very good dealings with my webhost, BlueHost. You could check them out, they'd probably be must cheaper and their techs are great; they helped me out big time a few months back when my site got hacked.
Good luck, Michael

Thanks everyone for the moral support! Jack, Intuit probably would have been a good idea as I use QuickBooks Pro for my bookkeeping clients. I also saved $900 this month by not going to my CPA and did our S-Corp return with Turbotax Business. I couldn't believe how easy it was, and realized that I have been throwing money away for years because of my fear of trying to figure out depreciation. Paul, I was lazy and didn't want to redesign my site from scratch so, accepting MS's offer to transfer to Office 365 with a "Easy Self-Transition Guide" seemed to be the best bet. Helen, yes I took classes on HTML and Flash and spent 6 months a few years ago building a very elaborate website for my parent's machinery and tooling company. It took me 6 months because I had to enter in over 5000 products. I realized that I did not want a career doing that ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) If you want to see the website I worked on it is www.tristatemach.com As far as my site, it's a simple WIZYWIG interface that I just uploaded photos too. It's for our Window Cleaning company so that we are visible on search engines. It's only two pages. I spent the most time designing our custom banner and trying to get it to work in the WIZYWIG program. We had our site hosted for free for a few years. When MS decided to stop the free service they offered an "Easy breezy" transition to their fee service. And really, it was just a matter of logging on to both the old service and the new service and copying and pasting. Issues didn't arrive until I got to the transfer domain stage. Now...... ARE YOU READY FOR THE KICKER? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? This morning I typed in www.bothellbuildingservices.com and it redirected me to the old office live site instead of the "Page Not Found" window. That got me thinking ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Hmmmmm. I could not figure out why my link was pointing to the old site when I had already redirected to the new site with the Registrar Company Melbourn IT, that I purchased my domain from. So, I went to MIT's site to check if I had messed something up with pointing my domain to Office 365. The information was correct but there was a message stating that DNS cancellation was still in progress and to please wait 24 hours. So, that got me thinking again ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Hmmmmm. I went back to Office 365 and poured through their online articles about transferring a domain. I found an article that said that domain redirection would not take effect until DNS service has been canceled with my registrar. So, I waited a few more hours (to get to 24), then typed in my website and "Poof" it's there! So, to make a very long winded story short... I was going to be charged $170.00 to go to sleep and wait until today ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png) Totally underhanded!!!!

UPDATE: Darn it.... now it's pointing to the old site again. I'm going to be patient, hopefully this still has something to do with the registrar redirection. Works one minute, doesn't the next, go figure? ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

Ok... from what you are saying... what I think the problem is is you need to go to your domain registrar and make sure that you have the right NS direction. Log into wherever your domain is registered, and to "Domain management". Then check NAMESERVER. If you already have the new nameserver, then you verify it's correct. If you do not, then you write to Microsoft and tell them you need your new nameserver for your domain name. They will know exactly what you are asking. Then go back to your Domain Manager, make sure that's plugged in. The nameserver has absolutely nothing to do with your domain name. It is simply the actual hard drive name that your particular website is hosted on, which you MUST have it properly directed to. For example, the host I'm currently using is Ipage. So my Name server is: ns1.ipage.com and ns2.ipage.com (that is hard drive 1 and hard drive 2 for them). My DOMAIN NAME is www.azenglass.com . See? Your domain name registrar MUST point to that so it can find your website. Your NAMESERVER on microsoft should be something like ns5.microsoft.com or something like that (because microsoft has a lot of nameservers). They can fit like 200 or way more websites on 1 ns. There should be TWO addresses there that will link directly to the SERVER (not domain name) that your websites are on. This is provided to you by Microsoft, and it DOES NOT COST YOU MONEY to ask them what your nameservers for your domain registrar are. That's like asking for your password if you forget it, and they can't charge you to tell you how your domain name directs your site. It's disturbing that it worked, then it did not... someone redirected it again... so this is the part you have to check. Once it's transfered, it should STAY transferred, so unless someone at Microsoft is transferring it again (why?), it should not become inaccessible once accessible (proving it was already done). I guess it's possible that your ISP routed your line a different way so that the DNS propagation did not take place the 2nd way... but that's where you would check to verify.
