So, I was asked to do the April Presentation at my rock club. I am petrified!!!! I don't like standing up in front of a lot of people!
My presentation is on tumbling obsidian. No problem except that I only have a month and I don't have any tumbled ob!!!
Guess I am going to go out to the garage tonight and split a bunch of ob rocks. Then I'll tumble for 10 days. At that point, I guess I will have to take them out and put them on the disks (or wheels if I use my Graves) and get rid of any pits, scratches or general yuckiness. Typically I need 2 months to round them out perfect. (Time constraint!!!)
Then, I'll put them in the Lot-O and go about my business.
I'm scared yall!
I don't like having to stand up in front of a whole bunch of people and explain stuff! My hands and voice are shaking already, and I'm a month away!!!!!!!!
EEK!

Ah now girl, you'll do just fine. Maybe you could show them some of your killer OB cabs, and take their minds off of what you're saying.

You'll do great, Krystee:P. You have the general equipment to preform right? Why can't you preform like 20 slabs into rough cabs, toss em in the Lot-O and have a fully tumbled batch in a week? Do you need a LOT of tumbled Obs??

Yeah, could easily do tumbled preforms... but.... that's not what this presentation is about. This is for the tumbling folks that don't cab. I've got this.... I just don't know if I can talk in front of a group. Couldn't do it well in high school or college. Age hasn't changed things ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Nervous to say it lightly!

Just give them that big old smile and win them over.
I have a bunch of partially tumbled Apache tears around here somewhere, but doubt if I could get them to you in time to finish.

Sounds like you're a lot scared, but that's okay. Doing stuff we're scared to do is where courage comes from...

Naw, don't pretend they have boogers. You'll just start laughing and then they'll start throwing rocks at ya.( Which may not be a bad thing from a rock club) lol My 2 cents is this - you've sat in an audiance and listened to a speaker right? What were you thinkin? you weren't - you were listining to what the person was saying. Just think of it that way and Wow em! Just make sure you don't have a booger in ur nose ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Looking at your work, I know that you know everything there is on the subject. Bering nervoes is normal and shows that you take your task seriously. I am a life long public speaker, yet I'm still nervoes every time I have to step in front of a lot of people. I usually prepare the first few minutes and a few backup notes, but seldom use them. Once you get started and you have to turn off from watching the people in front of you and just do the things you came for. When I start the right way, I find that things fall into place without me having to do anything as things get into a flow that usually runs into overtime. Just tell them those things that you are the most comfortable with and don't be afraid to acknowledge that there are things that you don't know. So relax, calm down and tell yourself that the world will not end if/when mistakes are going to happen. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Kurt, you actually made my fingers stop shaking tonight..... I will try to hold on to what you said!!! I started my project tonight. Hope I can get this done in a month. I'm going to have to tell my club that I grinded out the flaws from 60/90 on my disks/wheels. It's the only way I can get this done in a month. Hopefully there is not too terribly much to grind in 10 days..... I'm aprehensive though..... hammering a stone is never a good thing on a time limit! Ok then! Here we go for a "hopefully" perfect, if not completely natural, ob tumble! Midnight Lace Rocks that were smashed! (I actually only needed 2/3rds, so some were saved !): ![](http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv74/kgniot0709/P1040364.jpg) The barrel, 2/3rds full. Added in all the little sharp shards as well... Water an inch below: ![](http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv74/kgniot0709/P1040365.jpg) 24 Tablespoons 60/90.... YES... I do all my measurements in TBS! Don't laugh at me!!! ![](http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv74/kgniot0709/P1040368.jpg) 12lb Lortone barrel is on the go! I will empty around 3/29 and hopefully will not have to grind flaws out of too many pieces. Not to convinced of that though..... probably will have to grind most of them (dunno) Btw, I CAN tumble OB! Cabbing it isn't the only thing I love or do! Here is a pic of a batch I did last summer, ironically...... for my rock club! ![](http://i671.photobucket.com/albums/vv74/kgniot0709/P1030601rth.jpg)

Ohhh no its not me, it is your strength that will get you there.
You already got a good start. Keep taking pictures, so you can prepare a slideshow/power-point presentation for the whole process (including all the possible shortcomings, that you know of) in case you cant finish the stones on time.
That should ease you into your comfort zone for the first few minutes. After that, I'm sure you will get trough it without a problem.
At least you will have a record of the process to talk about, even if the actual stones at the presentation are different. And if there is no possibility of using projectors, you will have a record that will serve as your notes on the whole process (including pictures). Personally, I often use pictures as the only notes for a new project as this allows me to change things according to the situation and I can ask questions that come to mind to slow things down. I got used to invite as much public-participation as possible, so no two sessions are ever the same. If you are comfortable with that, you can also single out one or two controversial questions and keep them handy for cases where you get stuck. Usually that allows me to catch a breath/regain traction and or leads down a completely new road.
As said before, don't worry too much about it. The butterflies are perfectly normal; ask any artist, it does not matter if you perform in front of 20 or 20000. If people are interested (obviously they will be in your case as they will have made the effort to come) they will help you unknowingly by paying attention. I know it sounds New-Agey, but people attention can make you really do things you never thought you could. The biggest gig I ever did was in front of 200K+ people (maybe you have heard of Crazy English), I got so "high", they had to drag me off the stage after my time was up. LOLOL (will never forget that)
Last but not least, find a friend at the club who will attend your presentation in the club, and sit down with him or her a week ahead and have him or her listen to your presentation as you planed. That person serves two purposes: he/she can give you instant feedback on something you might not have thought of , and he/she will serve you as focal point in the crowd if you still feel giddy or get stuck.
Go and get them, there is yet a tiger in you,....... Kurt

Firstly, they are the ones who should be scared, looking at your out-of-this-world perfectly polished obsidian and realising how far they are from perfection ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Why don't you break the ice with a joke, something like you are named here on the board "the obsidian fairy" and you even brought your magic wand with ya (showing them the pencil). After this, I bet you would get their attention and your words will flow naturally. Good luck! Adrian

Krystee this is an easy one. A lot easier than the tumbling part. You say that you have a problem speaking to a large group. Simple solution. Sit Patrick in the front row, don't speak to the group, and just speak to Patrick. Everyone else will just be ease dropping. In most situations people get overwhelmed because they don't see the big picture until they step back and see the forest not just the big tree that is in front of them. In your situation it is the opposite. Don't focus on the forest but rather just one nice tree that you are familiar with. Let Patrick be your tree. You will be surprised as to how well your presentation will go. Everyone in the audience will be under the impression that you were speaking just to them. Stu
