At approximately 6 feet long with 12 rattles, this sucker thought he had it made-and he probably did, until we came along with the truck and shotgun. Please everyone, be careful out there, the snakes are hungry and grouchy this year. Thanks, Cindy

since the snake paid the ultimate sacrifice I hope you at least keep the skin. It would make a nice belt or hat band.

Ahh Woody, they taste better than that. Especially if you're hungry.
I too hope you'll skin that critter. Be a shame to see that beautiful hide go to waste. You can get a tanning kit from Tandy Leather for a few bucks. Just follow the instructions.

One question. Why aren't you holding it up with a bare hand ? That end won't hurt ya.

That was a nice snake. So sad, the big guy controlled a lot of rats and gophers in his life time.

That's not me holding the snake-it's the boss's daughter. I was taking the pictures so I couldn't possibly hold the snake! And while I appreciate the fact that he did a job while alive, I'm sure there's plenty more where this guy came from. Cindy

Hey what can I say. I like animals, especially snakes. Rattlers don't chase you down and attack you so I believe in live and let live. Even rattlers have their place in the ecosystem. I move them if they're somewhere where they'll be dangerous but some folks don't want to go to the trouble or are afraid of them and don't want to risk capturing them for removal. Unfortunately, Texans seem especially hard on all forms of wildlife which I found surprising when I moved here, as I thought they were rugged outdoorsy folks and would show more appreciation for nature in all forms. Instead, I've found lots of folks here are fearful of most everything that moves. If it has fur, they scream rabies. Every snake in the water is a Cottonmouth and every one on land is a rattler. Every hawk is a chicken hawk and every coyote an evil stock murdering critter. As a result of Texas slaughter of predators, we are freaking knee deep in deer and such and have to trap or shoot them to keep numbers in line. That's why I take kids on nature studies trips here on the ranch. Want to help them be less afraid of an more appreciative of nature and it works if you catch them before their fearful parents ruin them. L*.....Mel

And then you have Cajuns or Coonasses as we prefer to be called ;D that eat very damn thing that we can shoot, hook snare, trap or chase down and slice its throat. Waste not want not.

Perhaps the snakes should pay attention this year because the photo leaves no doubt which species is "grouchier" this year.
