Howdy folks, Jim (wampidy) has been slabbing some jade for me on shares since my saw is too small for most my jade hunks. Here are a few pics from the latest batch of slabs he returned to me.....Mel Porterville jade from the Janoko Mine. This piece was nice jade but pretty fractured. Very translucent stuff. Slabs from the best hunk of Darrington, Washington Chromoflec Mine jade I've ever had. This is very solid and has many shades of green including bright green chromium colored flecks throughout. So called Zebra Jade, also from the Darrington area. Think it's more of a nephrite/tremolite combination but it looks like it has nice potential for cabs. Jim says it's too delicate for his rings.

Mel: The nephrite/tremolite combination is quite common in Washington nephrite. It usually takes a good polish, and is tougher than one would expect. By oriental grading this material is on the low grade end, but it does have some great patterning to give more interest than a pure solid colour. Woody

But the Oriental grading is insane. The reason it is graded that way is because his father and his father and his father etc etc graded it that way. And it does not matter how beautiful a new jade is they would not like it if you hit them with a 2 X 4. They are running out of the good stuff and in stead of moving on they just keep paying more and more for what little comes available. People there will make payments for a stone like people make payments on a car here. The good side for them is that people that have a little stash are getting rich. They are having the same problem with the soapstone and people are looking all over the world for stone the same as what they like best. Not happening yet though so they are making fake stone and it takes a very knowledgeable person to tell the difference. Jim

The number and variety of jade found on the west coast is pretty amazing. Nice examples.
