I have been away from carving for a couple of years so I have decided to get back into it for at least one more project. Except for a couple of carvings most of my work has been pretty simple so I figured it was time to give myself a real challenge. It is time for me to figure out if I have it or do not have it. I carve with only hand tools so this project will probably take me all summer and when you look at the pictures you will see why. I have had this stone for years and I believe it is from Utah. It is alabaster with purple and white marbling, The color will come out much better when it is sanded and polished. I am going to photograph my progress and post it here from time to time. This should give me more incentive to keep going. lol This photo is copyrighted but I am going to get in touch with the artist to make sure that it is ok to use it. Since I am an amateur and do not plan to make a profit from it I think there will be no problems. First the picture then a doctored picture so it will be easier to transfer it to the stone with carbon paper. The stone is about 9 inches by 6 inches. The carving is going to be 5 inches tall and I have not decided which way I am going to orientate it. Still in the planning stages. Wish me a steady hand. lol Jim

I have been in Hong Kong for to long and have gotten too used to fast-food. LOL I don't think I will ever have the patience to undertake something that challenging.
I love your idea of turning the picture into a negative. That gives so much more depth perception.
You are telling so many of us that we are artists, yet you show us what it means to be a true artist by having the vision and patience to go for it.
Have a steady hand my friend; I for one truly look forward to see how your vision will come to fruition, and hope to learn with and from your experience as you go along.
Best regards, Kurt

Jim, if that one turns out like your other fairy carving, it's going to be breathtaking!!!! Great rewards come from great risks, this may take a while, but WOWSERS will it be something else when you are done:)!!!
And as beautiful as that is, everyone will be thrilled to root you onwards:)!!!
