Howdy folks,
Yesterday the wife and I headed down to the Three River's/George West area of Texas for our annual petrified wood hunt. Absolutely friggin awesome day with sunshine and 85 degree temps and we brought home a couple of hundred pounds of fine Texas wood. I've got to apologize for not taking pics on the trip. Been awhile since I was down that way and between gawking at the unbelievable wildflower display this year, the birds, the butterflies and all the wonderful wood along one of the roads we found, I never even got my camera out of the car. If you've never visited the Texas thornbrush country on a good wildflower year, this is the year for it as I've never even imagined flowers that pretty or smells that delightful. It was like hounding in a perfume factory painted by an impressionist in some spots.
The drive down was pretty hairy due to the oilfield development in the area . A lot of the truckers are really bad drivers and drive fast too. It was also interesting going through Devine, Texas on our way down. Devine got hit by a tornado the other day and some homes were pretty messed up which was sad to see but it was kind of awesome seeing the path where the funnel cut through some woods and twisted trees like corkscrews. Incredible force in those storms!
Anyway, enough of my babbling. Here's a pic of the wood I just loaded out of my jeep. Still covered in the ever present caliche. I'll take more pics after I wash it all off. The largest hunks are in the fifteen pound range including one huge piece of pocket rot wood where the wood is red and the pockets filled with quartz crystals. Notice the little pile by my wife's bag on the left. that's her " Mel keep yore friggin hands off my stuff" pile. She's already claimed those for her garden. Now I have to worry how much out of "my" wood she'll claim too *L*....Mel
