Just curious if I am insane or not...I'm on the road to pick up a 12" saw that is 345 miles away...I will get cost (food, gas, saw) totals and pictures up later so everybody can evaluate my sanity.

We are the wrong people to ask! It seems quite 'logical' to me! Sue

I hauled my 18" saw 750 miles from arizona to utah, but the saw was given to me. It doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Robert

well, I went 225 miles from Corvallis to Tacoma to get my 10" Lortone, but it was priced about $150 or more less than I seem them sell for. As a bonus I got to meet Shannon/weeshan who bought the 2nd saw the guy had.
I went 250 miles from Lawrence, KS to Tulsa, OK for my 12" Lortone, which was priced about $200 less than they usually sell for.

I carted a 24" HP saw from California to South Dakota when I moved. This after having a more than generous offer for it. We don't do it for the cost. We do it for the love of the hobby.

Scott being insane is a requirement for anyone spending time playing with rocks. Hope it is worth the trip. Quite often people selling saws have rocks also so be sure to ask.

Already asked and struck out. I'm glad the early results are leaning on the side of sanity! Shipping was out of the question...they wouldn't do it. Only ten minutes before I meet my bride...I mean saw...feels a lot like getting ready for a honeymoon though!

I have gone as far North as Seattle to pick up a saw, a little under 700 miles one way and as far as Southern California the other way, although I was in Quartzsite at the time. I try to find more stuff along the way to pickup if I have to go that far though. For the right price and the right saw I would probably drive even farther, so I think what you are doing is completely sane.
Tony
So............did you check to see what rock hounding areas are along the way? I get to see alot of new areas that way.

Tony So............did you check to see what rock hounding areas are along the way? I get to see alot of new areas that way. I didn't have a chance. It hit Craigslist and I had to get on it fast! I may hit a rock shop in Chicago if I can convince my wife. I just picked up the saw. It is in great shape except for a little surface rust on the outside of housing. The feed and shut off work flawlessly. I suspect you folks will approve. If I can get home without any disasters, this will be a great deal! Scott

Hmm, I drove somewhere between 1500 and 2000 miles to have the privilege of finding my very own Petoskey stone. Sometimes it's as much about the trip as it is about the prize... although it does sound like you found quite a prize!
Enjoy!
