I wanted to cut something different the last few days to break up the routine of "regular" cabs. In the last twelve weeks (not including time off for the shows), I've cut around 450 pieces............. First up - Native Silver (aka Cobaltite) + Turquoise Next - Nickeline + Black Jade I'm pretty stoked about the results since the joint where the two pieces of jade meet isn't visible. The last one is a belt buckle someone ordered on commission. This is some of the most agatized and purple Charoite I've ever seen. I half-jokingly call it the "Jimi Hendrix Purple Experience" buckle. Right On Man!!!!!!!!! WARNING: If anyone does ever cut any of the Cobaltite/Native Silver, Nickeline or even the Bumble Bee jasper, all of these have various levels of arsenic and can be toxic. So take the necessary precautions: Use plenty of water when cutting. Have good ventilation. Wipe down everything with a wet towel or rag when finished. Wear a respirator. Wear gloves. Wash your clothing. Take a shower when finished. Take care

Outstanding work and beautiful materials! Very inspiring and I love it when people offer up safety warnings. We always have newbies around here and safety can't be taken lightly with our hobby! Thanks for sharing! Fran

Very nice pieces Richard. I really like compound pieces that have been put together like that. The possiabilities are endless. My whole workbench has stacks of "to do's" of compound pieces. Thanks also for the safty tips. That's good for people like me that just want to work the stone and don't really take the time to find out the safty issues. Maybe the mods will start a, rock related safty issue board one day

Thanks everyone. As we all know it's sometimes easy to fall in love with our own work. While I enjoy making these types of cabs, I also have to keep in mind what the jewelers want for their own creations. After playing with both of these cabs, I think a jeweler with the right imagination is going to have a blast. The contrasting color really creates an eye catching piece. With just a little color on the edge after being bezel set, I think they'll be pretty cool. To answer a few questions and/or comment. karock- I'm using "Super T" super glue for most of the work but occasionally use "Special T". "Hot Stuff" sets in less than 10 seconds and this is too short of time to accurately get a piece in position. It does work really well for filling pits and cracks. I can't count how many cabs I've saved this way."Special T" sets up in 20-50 seconds and unless something is really complicated or intricate, there is a little too much time for something to slide or slip out of place. (Someone did try to sell me a $40 bottle of epoxy recently. It only required 8 hours to dry. I didn't buy any.) frane- A list on this forum of all the poisonous gemstones would be a really good idea. I bet a lot of folks aren't aware of some of the likely culprits. Here's a list on a really cool website: www.classicgems.net/info_Poisonous.htmA list of radioactive ones: www.classicgems.net/info_Radioactive.htmAnd a list of some other cool gemstone phenomena: www.classicgems.net/index.htmladrian65- Intarsia is the more appropriate name for this style of lapidary work. When I previously used intarsia, most jewelers would respond with a blank stare or that deer in the headlights look and respond with something like "Cool. I'm into the metaphysical thing also....so what are you doing with the inner stars?" Sad.
