I cut this one last night it is 38.5mm x 25mm x 7mm and wieghs 42.95ct. I thought that this was just some stained quartz but it is much too soft to be quartz. The black areas shine like blue Gold Stone, all sparkly. What do you all think is it Turquoise? If so, does anyone know or have an idea of what kind? Here are the photos Thank you in advance for all your help in identifying this cab material. Christopher

Looks like it might be variscite or perhaps even variquoise.

Could the sparkly black be leopard opal?

Pat, I am 99.99% sure that the black areas are not opal. Seems like......I don't know.... magnetite....or maybe galena......not sure. All I know is that it is black and has a bunch of little sparkles in it like blue goldstone.

Definately not turquoise. Looks like some of that chinese man made stuff?

It is natural whatever it is. All I could smell when cutting it was fresh dirt. There was no plastic smell at all.

Really nice cab. Not really sure what it is but it does remind me of varcasite.

So where did you get the original material? What about the hardness? Color streak? Cleavage? Fracture? Any chance you can measure the s.g.? Trying to id stones from a pic is always challenging.

It could be chrysocolla in quartz with other stuff. My humble opinion. Sheri

That's what I thought at first also, Sheri. It is to soft for that though, not the right texture. It was chalky and clay like.

Asked my friend (a certified rocktionary) what it might be and he guessed "shattuckite with iron stained turquoise". FWIW

It reminds me of Spencer opal matrix, but the stuff I have doesn't have any sparkles in it. Pattern is similar though...and it's soft, kind of chalky, and takes more of a sheen than a shine sometimes. T
