Howdy folks, Here are pics of some of the wood we got at Three Rivers yesterday. Any ID help would be appreciated from any of you wood experts. Thanks for looking.....Mel Mossy Woodcasts: Big shrinkwood hunk that is probably palm but no wood grain remains: End of a cast about 8 inches long. Full of moss and fortifications: More odd botryoidal casts with tubes and eyes: Found quite a lot of wood this time with color and pattern kind of like AZ material: This wood looks like Pata de Gallo inside: Some kind of hardwood: Wood with odd flower like inclusions inside: More cool mossy wood: Couple types of unknown wood: Full round palm shrinkwood that was just coming out of a caliche bank. If you look close you can see it's gold with deep black spots. Someone found an incredible piece of shrinkwood and just left me a chip *L* Palm shrinkwood: Palm root: Note the tube shaped structures: One of those conical palm shrinkwood masses, wet and dry:Very colorful inside: The wife found this large mass of palm root. Fully agatized but this one still retains a lot of the root pattern: Couple more examples of some type of palm: Some of the red jasper tumbles I almost never pick up. again only remembered to get a couple: Agate in center looks like a baby Brazilian. Second time I've found one.

Very neat! What is shrinkwood and how is it different from regular petrified wood?

Helen: Shrinkwood is sort of a local collectors' name for wood that has been laid down, partly decomposed so that it appears brecciated and then resealed with silica. There are a huge number of variations and colors with some appearing almost hexagonally fractured, some only slightly brecciated and still showing good grain and other examples so decomposed that wood grain is hardly visible at all which I suppose puts them more in the realm of a wood cast. Those look like wood on the exterior but inside can be clear, mossy etc. We found a lot of that latter category on these last two trips. The hexagonally fractured black and gold stuff is the most prized and by far the rarest type. A lot of the so called shrinkwood starts out as palm fiber but in the end, it's so altered you can hardly tell what it is....Mel

Ahaa! Thanks for the explanation Mel!!!!
That would explain some of the wild patterns I've seen with what looks like honeycombs in the background of other patterns. Appreciate that, still learning the terminology:).

Cool stuff Mel. I sure hope I can find some palm and hexagonally fractured wood. A couple of Cycads would be nice too. Well heck, I can dream can't I?
