Hi, y'all - In my endless googling of anything to do with rocks and polishing, I came across a thing where the guy was eloquently discussing polishes and pads. Seemed he liked leather pads the best. So... Do you think a good, heavy piece of leather would work as a polish pad in a 20" Lortone vibratory Lap pan? Seems it would last a lot longer than the wimpy synthetic felt-like ones that are all I can find... What do you think? C-ya, Rick

If you can keep it flat it would likely work well. The carpet or felt discs cut snug will stay down with the bumper ring. Thin leather would probably wear out pretty fast.

if you get leather wet it tends to get soft and limp and want to wrinkle up

Rick, I've mentioned this stuff before. If you have an RV supply or repair shop in your area, get the dark gray material they use to line the outside storage compartments. Can't remember the actual name of it, but when I worked for Fleetwood Motor Homes in California, I used to bring their large scraps home to use as polishing pads. It works great, and will far outlast felt.

Jake - yeah, I remember reading that. Actually, I just found out today (while doing a surprisingly fruitless search of marine stores for boat carpet - all they had was nylon for trailer bunks) that there is a new RV place just north of town. I'm gonna try to see if I can find it in the phone book (duh!!) and ask if they have any. Sure is difficult to find anything uncommon in stores anymore. The boating shops all said they could order it but didn't stock it. I was flabbergasted. I remember in the late 80's I re-carpeted the boat I use to catch shrimp in and all the shops had nice boat/outdoor carpet in stock and I just went and snagged some when I needed it. Used it to carpet the bunks when I modified the trailer for my bass boat trailer to be a drive-on rather than a keel roller trailer. Redid my bass boat in the early nineties and had no trouble then, either. Things sure aren't like they used to be...
John - I haven't been able to get hold of any wool carpet, yet. Looked on ebay and all they have are super expensive area rugs. I've had to glue my felt (stuff looks almost like fiberglass mat) pads down to the bottom of the pan with contact cement because they won't stay put with 30lbs of rocks spinning around the pan. That and the things actually shrink almost an inch in diameter after a couple of days. At least that's what happened last year - I'm not absolutely 100% sure the one that shrunk was from Kingsley like the last 3 or 4 but they are the only place I've found recently that sells them other than the company that makes Reciprolaps. I bought a pan last year from US&J, I think, and thought they sold the pads, too, but a quick check shows that they don't. That was the only other place I can think of that I might have gotten one from.
Frog-Bear - What if I put glue on the entire pan surface? The leather I'm looking at is "tooling" leather and I'm guessing it oughtta be at least as thick as a baseball glove.
Thanks, y'all - Rick
