I cut some of this Jade and it fell in to many pieces. It was only about 3/8" thick, 1/2" wide and 2" long, is this normal? Was hoping to try carving some but now I don't know. Do you think it needs treated? Have a piece that's about 1" thick, looks more solid, maybe it will stay together.
Thanks

I have an end butt from a large piece of jade that is so fractured that I can not slab it without it falling apart. I have others that are solid as a "rock". All stones can be fractured and if you get one without fractures you are lucky. Depends a lot on where they come from and whether they have been mined or picked up off the ground.
As far as being treated I do not know. I just go to the next rock. Jim

Sounds shady. PM me your address and I'll send you some real Alaskan jade.

Geoff, That is a great piece hope I can do it justice. Is both pieces jade, if so are they different names? What kinds of rock do you like?
Thanks so much.

Yeah, sorry. I completely forgot to label everything I sent out last week. The jadeite is from Schwatka as well. The big piece is brecciated nephrite that is very similar to mariposite. It's a secondary gold ore from Grubstake mine in the Talkeetna Range. Polishes best with Zam or other CrO polish. Don't try to tumble it, it's composed of nephrite, calcite, and quartz. Too many different hardnesses. I tried to dig out a piece with as little quartz as possible though.

Geoff, Top left and second row I'm not sure what they are. Top right is a greenish stone, Andeite I was told found in Az. Rose Rock, Oklahoma rock, and some of the Jade I was telling you about, the larger one seems to be ok while the thin longer one may fall apart when sawed. Bottom left is quartz probably from Mount Ida Arkansas and right is Selenite the Oklahoma mineral. Attachments:

Thanks GR, is there a area that is for helping take pictures here? I put camera on P was on PICT and set quality level to *** best, pixels were 1600, left them there. White Balance was AWB, left. Using flower, macro mode and s flower, super macro mode. Here's one picture with macro and one with super macro. Attachments:
