Spent a few days down on the Kenai Peninsula. It's a great area with pretty limited rock hounding. Here is what you find the whole 180 miles from Anchorage. Chugach Crud and vein calcite. The best time is early spring, before the tourists come and pick the beaches clean. The best beach in my opinion is Nikiski Beach on Salamatof Rd. Its situated between a natural gas refinery and some other petroleum processing facility. It may not be the most naturally beautiful location, but I like it. The tiny black dot in the middle is my dog. You get a great view of the source of the agates you're hunting, Mt Illiamna and Mt Redoubt. Two Aleutian volcanoes directly across the inlet. Illiamna Redoubt After two days digging through the overwhelming gravels we headed an hour and a half south to Homer. Nothing to special rock wise here, some coal with micro amber and quartz gravels, but still a cool place to visit. It's as far south as you can drive on the Kenai without taking the ferry to Seldovia of course. While in Homer, you get a beautiful view of Augustine volcano, all by itself in the middle of the sea. Another cool thing about Homer is the wildlife. Bald eagles are as bad here as pigeons in New York. There's also golden eagles, hawks, owls, you name it.
