Does anyone have a photo of this unit. The site has a drawing and it is worthless.
I aqm trying to see if it is a preform maker or something else. I want to get a preform maker, but can't seem to find one.

These Covington pieces clamp into a slab saw, and help to make the cuts for a sphere preform. You will still have to grind the sharp points and edges off before putting the preform in your sphere machine. There is a company that makes a better pre former. I'll see if I can find a link to it. Don

That's the site I was looking for. I bought my cup adapters from this guy. A little search of his site will turn up a short video of the sphere indexer in use.

I just went to order one but the shipping was asinine. I have found that people who charge ridiculous shipping charges are usually the first one to screw you.
Guess I am not going to order one after all.

Just make your own or look for a simpler jig then that one. Here is mine, works great. Tim

Well, that thing looks like a true work of art.
I have no idea how you would use it.

Well, that thing looks like a true work of art. I have no idea how you would use it. I would think that the cube would have to be larger than the "wing" that points to the left in the photo. And a bit longer than the length of the jig. I've been building one in my mind for the last few weeks and then this pic shows up.

I just went through his site to the calculate shipping part, not unreasonable at all. I am sure he ships by UPS and puts money and effort into safely packing it, and $22.50 is too much?!?

I do. I find that to be quite excessive. I talked to him and he says that paypal made it that way. I am naturally suspicious of people I have no experience with. I guess it comes with the job I do.

Justin, visualize clamping that jig onto a tile saw table. It's positioned so the cuts are made in the correct place. Soon, you will understand where that is.
Now put the cube - corner down - into the angle. Now the cube is sitting at a 45 degree angle like a diamond. Flat face of the cube is facing the blade and the back of the saw table. Hold cube in place by hand and feed across the saw blade. Carefully trim, rotate 90 degrees, trim again, keep rotating and cutting until all the corners are clipped into a preform.
In tha case of Tim's image the point of view is from near where the saw blade would be. Saw blade would be slightly right of the camera in this image.
I have seen the same from two pieces of angle iron welded in a sort of 96 position so when placed on the table the same orientation is achieved.

Rod is cool. No doubt. But $22.50 for small parts is silly. I have a 36# hunk of railroad track/anvil that will ship for $16. I don't know the size of the part in question, but if it fits in a MFRB then the price is almost double what it should be. UPS is overpriced so they can pay their overpaid union staff.

I watched the videos. I like how the sphere indexer does not require starting from a cube. Instead it starts from to parallel faces. The finished preforms are very uniform, this makes for faster hand grinds.

Thanks Scott and Tim! Clears things up for me. I do have a vertical vise so might have to modify things a bit. I was still toying around with the idea of making a simpler sphere index jig but haven't worked on it very much.
