A week ago, I let the club field trip to Saddle Mountain, Washington for pet wood. This is area set aside by the BLM for both rock hounding, and off road vehicles.............so, of course my Big Wheel Yamaha was part of the gear for this trip. Here are some photographs of the trip. Yoy will see that we have a couple feet of dirt, then five or six feet of crumbly basalt to dig through before hitting the pet wood. My hole was about nine feet deep. Woody The week end prize The dig..me in the deep hole Kathy in the hole Me again One tired digger, and one getting tired One happy digger Some smaller pet wood Sunday night after the working people had left sitting around our legal fire.

Sounds hard work, but lucky you guys; you seem to have gotten paid well. Any pics of cuts from this monster?

For where to dig at Saddle Mountain you find map showing the lava flows, and dig there, or dig where others have dug before. You can find 'bog' wood formed by a log jam being buried, and standing trees, as well as trees laying down in different places. The collecting area is about four miles wide, and twenty five long, so there is a lot of area to search. Woody

Great post. I realize that there is no optimist like a rock hound but after seeing how deep that dig was I had the same question as Darstcreek. Please show us the treasures after you wash them down or saw them. Thanks.

Carlos: Have a look at the root ball in the specimen section, it came out from under the big dirty one.

Woody did you dig that 9' deep hole while you were there? Man that's a lot of work. That week end prize would make some good turning wood.
