I drove down to Zapata yesterday to do a little hounding. The weather promised to be overcast which kept the heat down for a little while. I walked down a couple of road cuts which had many trails branching off. Snake protection and tick repellent are mandatory: I climbed up the backside of this ridge and clambered down to a couple of gravel outcrops. The breeze was on the backside. No breeze on this side and it was 98F by then. You can see Mexico on the left side of the Rio. I would love to hound on that side. Terrain is a bit rough here but river gravel is everywhere. Some of these hills have nothing but gravel and sand on their tops. After a rain the ground actually feels springy. I found some jasper, jasp-agate and brought back more Rio Grande moss than I should have (not in the picture): Picked up some of that root beer agate that looks like Montana: Agates, including one big one: You can see red in several of the windows on this biggun. This jasper may prove interesting: The green on this agate just popped when I spotted it. It may be the rind: When the clouds cleared after noon the temp shot up. I brought plenty of water and a few snacks. Thanks for peeking.

Great finds! That root beer agate does look like Montana! I would be a bit spooked to prowl around that close to the border, I guess that must not be be a hot spot for trouble?

The oil field workers and haulers I know tell me that the day belongs to the honest folks but stay off the ranches and back roads between the highway and the river at night!

That big agate has some killer surface patterns. Hope that goes all the way through for you. Wanna see pics after you cut it.

This haul was worth dealing with the snakes, ticks, and border crosser s!

The "poppy" jasper looks like a fossil of some sort. Very cool.
I'm also eager to see the "biggun" cut. That looks like a great find!

Nice finds. I've still got a bunch to cut from my trip there in January. It looks like you were more off road than we were. Definitely want to go back there.
