So as great as Austin is for fossils.... its pretty dry when it comes to agates, jaspers and other good pieces for trying to make jewelery with. Can someone point me to some good Texas hunting sites...preferably within 200 miles? Im not to interested in Llanite or Mason Topaz (as I hear its hard to find in quantity). Is there other good stuff around the Llano uplift? Any good agate spots on public land? Prefferably with a creek I can walk down... Its always refreshing during the hot summer? It feels like summer already at least .... Extra credit if there's a spot with Agates/Jasper and fossils.

We have found some decent agate/jasper here in Sun City but it is so limited and you have to be really lucky to find it. We also found some at the Mason county fairground when we were there.
Strangely enough, some of the best rocks we have found here have been in the landscape rocks that are in our own yard. My guess is that we could find a bunch of pet wood, jasper and some agates in every yard that has landscape rock. It's just not that much fun looking for it. Naturally we also have PLENTY of flint. The agates here are SO much different from the ones we found on the Oregon coast.

Howdy Texa rock,
If I were you, I'd head down into the Live Oak County area between Tilden, Three Rivers and George West, about 150 miles from Austin. Most the gravel county roads n that region are lined with good petrified wood plus agate and nice red jasper thrown in. Lots of the wood is shrinkwood, there is some palm, and often the wood is in wood cast form so is totally replaced with colorful moss agate inside. Roadside ditches are fine to collect in and I usually find two or three buckets of good stuff on a day trip. Only thing is, a lot of folks hunt the roads so you have to be persistent until you find a road that has not been heavily hunted since the last rain.....Mel
