That's how far I drove Saturday and what I came home with. And a milk crate full of mostly pet wood, including the object of my trip -- shrinkwood. I went out to the George West/Three Rivers area and hit the county roads that have not yet been paved. It looks like it has not rained in a while there, so the caliche was thick and dusty. Most of the material had been pushed to the edge of the roads from traffic, making it easier to spot without having to dig much out. I have to say this was the most colorful pet wood I have ever found. Here are some examples: The silicification of this one has left much of the wood fibers intact as they drift into darker agate. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/2dc01c43.jpg) While it looks like petrified vomit, I think this may be palm root. Correct me if I am wrong. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/a33581a3.jpg) An strikingly agatized piece next to a piece of shrinkwood. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/be7f8f72.jpg) ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/3d7ee327.jpg) Check out the grain in this one. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/88da3249.jpg) Colorful piece ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/ad1b9adf.jpg) The variety was astonishing. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/fdf7d7a3.jpg) Another weird piece of wood, almost looks like wonderstone. the outside was bright white. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/a70a27de.jpg) The only piece of palm, I found, but it is a beauty. It's a slabbette about 2 inches long. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/7b022f57.jpg) A couple shrinkwoods. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/19ce0ceb.jpg) ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/187d74c7.jpg) This is about half of the shrinkwood I found. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/b427c0a5.jpg) Red shrinkwood? I am dying to cut into this one. ![](http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b293/textiger/e027c1da.jpg) Sorry if this was too many pics. But I'm quite pleased with the results of the trip. And Aleve is a godsend. matt

Excellent finds Matt! That piece of palm is especially nice. Must have been a bit hot this late in the season. Isn't it amazing the variety of stuff you can find on those roads? Seems I find something new each time I go down there and the colors and patterns seem endless. I thought the AZ wood I hunted was cool till I saw the Texas stuff. I have a load in the tumbler right now that contains the first of this years road hunt finds. Hope to post them in a couple of days and I flat can't wait to go out again when the weather cools next fall.....Mel

Super finds Mel. That red is very interesting. I love the piece of shrink wood that you sent to me. Beats the hell out of the wood that I find here. If they are putting this stuff down for gravel it looks to me like the best thing to do is find the gravel pit. lol Jim

Those are some great pieces Matt. That well silicated wood seems to follow the Nueces River path from Three Rivers down to San Patricio. Rub some liniment on yore back and sharpen that saw. Don't worry about posting too much cause you can't exceed my curiosity.

I've never heard of shrinkwood. The red caught my attention.
What's a slabette? A little French slab?

Funny one, Pat.
Mel, it was hotter than I expected, in the 90s. I drank a lot of water, and sweated most of it out. But it was definitely worth it. Thankfully, there was not too much traffic on those dusty roads. I had a feeling a couple of them had been hounded recently. I found several rocks/wood that clearly had been picked up and put back down -- who knows, could have been hours before me or days. I definitely will go back there again. Perhaps if it rains there some time.

Matt, *S* Yep, the other Matt, Matt Dillon was there right before and right after my two trips this year. Texaswoodie ( Curt) was just there too. Really fun collecting area and you never know what you'll find. Plus, you got all the great wildflowers and critters to watch too. Never have seen better butterfly and flower watching than this year. I did notice several of my favorite roads had been freshly resurfaced spoiling the collecting which last year was great but with effort, one can still find a road that is relatively rich. Found some of my best palm yet this year plus many tropical looking woods that I have no clue on as to identity....Mel

Some of them are beautiful specimens! The "grain on that one" is fantastic, indeed.
