I was at the Searchers gem show last weekend in Anaheim and a person told me that Jalama Beach was closed to collecting. i just checked the website and it wasn't posted. Anyone hear anything about this? I'm thinking it's a good summer, snake free site to collect.
I had a blast at the gem show. My wife twisted my arm to join their club. They sure know how to pack a dollar grab bag for their shows.
Thanks Bill G.

Bill, I'll be calling them, that might be my destination for the coming weekend - too hot for the desert.

Hi Bill. So I called, and the guy I spoke to said they are NOT closed to collecting.

That's great news. I was there last summer and had a good time. It was my first "official" rockhounding site. We parked by the snack bar or cafe. It was very windy and we headed north from the parking lot. We ended up with a couple of bags of beach rocks. There is a creek emptying into the ocean that had some neat stuff in it near the campground.
So after all that, I found out from our fellow rockhounds on this board that I should have gone south. So sometine this summer I will make the trip again and head south.
We are very tempted to get one of the cabins at the campground. It's a bit of a drive (12 miles) on a winding road to get there. It's well worth it. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Bill. I've been reading your and Paul's old trip reports from the desert this morning. Now those have me really REALLY wanting to go to Lavic, hot or not! I mean, people live out there, I'm not going to melt. ;-) If I decide not to though, Jalama and Lake Cachuma will probably be my destinations for the weekend.

I'm 31 miles from Lavic. It has been cooler here than Riverside. 80's by afternoon and a sweat shirt in the morning. Get an early start and you should be OK. Jalama is closed to collecting whale bone, fossils, and Indian relics. There is some really nice onyx north and the whale bone is about 5 miles south.

Wow, you do live close to Lavic! Thanks for the info. I plan to stay somewhere out there so I can get a nice sunrise start.
Interesting about Jalama -- the person/ranger/whatever I spoke with apparently didn't know about that or wasn't paying very good attention. Good to know the rocks are still colletible, but I suppose it would still pay to be discreet (i.e., backpack rather than Home Depot bucket). I'm not that into whale bone or fossils (and Indian relics aren't collectible anywhere, afaik?), but some folks will be disappointed about the whale bone.

Don't know if it's still open to collecting, but if you go just past Amboy to the Kel-Baker Rd., and go up Kel-Baker about 1 to 1-1/2 miles, on the side of a hill to the left you'll see the headframe of the old Black Jack silver mine. Some nice dumortierite can be found by digging in the tailings. Don't try going into the mine. Last time I saw it, it was very unstable. Don

Yes Jalama Beach does not allow rock collecting. Though it does happen it is not legal and the Rangers can site 100 dollar fine

No the law is not new but our resources are getting so thin we want to protect the little that is left. Years ago you could always go down the beach and see petrified whale bone but now its all been taken away.

The whale bone I collected many years ago was a really hard 5 mile hike south at Point Conception. There is a wash that comes down just above the point. 5 miles as the seagull flies is a long hike up and down rocks and crossing sea walls. We started as high tide was receding and were walking through the incoming high tide on way back. Several years later we were collecting shells and beach rock and rangers were patrolling the beach. They made me dump the bucket looking for whale bone. They didn't find any and didn't stop me from reloading the bucket. Someone told me they patrol a couple times a week mainly so they can eat a Jalama burger. The last time I was there must be 6 or 7 years ago but I think it is a county park not state or federal or anything that would restrict shell and rock collecting. The rangers there would be best bet to find out for sure. Winter was much better than the one time we went in August. August had the beaches all sanded over but in the Winter the storms keep the beach rockier. Good perch fishing in the Winter as well.

I wouldn't know a whale bone from a soup bone. I just find beach rockhounding very relaxing. Cool off the feet and find a bunch of pre-tumbled material. Did I hear wrong, beach sand can be used as grit?
