I've collected gems for a while. I wanted to make something for my wife for mother's Day. I thought I'd put something together after seeing some of Pat's jewelry. She was kind enough to explain how I could get started. So I picked up some not-too-expensive peridot and topaz and bought the tool and findings. Loose gems A pendant An earring The set

Thanks so much for your help Pat!
It was cool because tripps has exactly what I needed to do what I wanted.

Nicely balanced, and love the color-contrast. Soon you put your jeweler out of business.

Beautiful set, she is one lucky woman. Glad you are able to give her something you made, that makes it extra special.

Awsome John!
The blue topaz in the earring on the right is not fully seated, and might fall out, so you need to tighten that. I haven't attempted doing mounted gems yet... but I've been thinking about it for years!!

Thanks all
Helen I rechecked and the prongs are all OK, I think it is the angle of the photo and the cell-phone-quality.
Now that I am looking at them, I just hope they aren't too gaudy. We'll see what she says.

Those are beautiful! I don't think they look "gaudy," but everyone has their preferences

Very nice, did you say tool? A tool to set the findings? Where did you get it and did it work ok? I need a good setter.

steveo I bought some special pliers from Tripps.com
they open and close in parallel (versus being hinged on one end), although I don't feel like the quality is super great on them.
All they do is close in parallel with some sort of lever in them to increase the pressure as you squeeze. They also limit the travel of the pliers to 1mm or so to minimize the risk of over-squeezing.
