I find these rocks evrywhere I have been in North Dakota they are one of my favorite from here, I was wondering if they are a type of picture jasper. I did google them and found some on a site that listed them as picture jasper it was the only one I found and I have been calling them that for years because they have pictures on them to me. also there is pics of some red moss agate Local stuff not sure what the names of some of the rocks I find here. 1. What I call picture jasper the bigger ones are almost as big as my hand 2. Red moss agate

Hi Tammy:). I call jaspers with pictures 'picture jasper', but I have no idea what they are called 'formally'. I mean what else do you call a jasper with a picture? Now Oywhee Picture Jasper is a specific rock from a specific area according to Hans Gramma's book, but it seems many others call any picture Jaspers from Owyhee 'Owyhee Picture Jaspers' too.... they're found in Owyhee, and they are picture jaspers... sooo.
I have no idea, but it seems to me it's just easier to describe if you call it Picture Jasper if there's a picture in it:P.

I believe it's South Dakota Prairie Agate/Jasper. I don't think it's restricted to South Dakota, it's just a name.

We have a lot of the same here except that what is found here is more salmon colored or deep red and the only thing that I have heard it called is prairie agate. When Mel saw it he told me that it looked similar to what came out of the Dakotas. Some of the salmon stuff does have picture patterns in it. Jim

Just curious, what part of North Dakota did you find these in? I moved to north central North Dakota last year and am looking for places around here to pick rocks...
Thanks, Matt
